Food for thought

Brief, lucid commentary on the attacks on Indian students here in Australia, and the politicians' response to it (ie denial until there was money at stake) from Waleed Aly at the Monthly: Racism, Australian-Style.

The studies Aly refers to can be found online: The Anti-Racism Research Project; Does Racial and Ethnic Discrimination Vary Across Minority Groups?. (Bizarrely, the latter links to the researcher's blog, where he comments on Children of Earth!)

Counterproductive ideology seems to have a stranglehold on much online discussion of racism. Looking for alternatives, I found a lecture which challenges some of the assumptions constantly repeated online: Why Anti-Racism Will Fail, by the Rev Thandeka of the UU. You may not agree with everything she says, but it'll surely give you a new perspective.
