State of Play

Thanks to a mate, I'm watching State of Play, the highly regarded 2003 British TV drama. All the main cast are White, but every time there's a minor role - an informant, a lawyer, a dead young man's mum - a POC has been cast. Now these are wittily written, interesting small roles, without too much stereotyping (though it's not shock that the petty criminal is Black); but the effect it creates is accidentally comic, much like the way that admirals in Star Trek: The Next Generation were often Black or women or both.
