March 30

I haven't updated much lately. I guess I just haven't been too loquacious, or nothing much has happened that seemed worth commenting on. However, here's a brief update.

The big news is that Chip Brown is moving in with me in late April or early May. This was a totally spur-of-the-moment decision on my part, but one that feels totally right. I'm nervous about it - I've lived by myself for 14 years now - but excited. I think Chip will be a fun roomie, and it will definitely help with the expenses. Plus, I think he and I are both going stir-crazy from too much introspection and alone time, so it'll be good for both of us.

Tomorrow night (Friday March 31) I am going to sing with the Kronos Quartet at the Tennessee Theater, as part of the Knoxville Opera chorus. This is very exciting. The piece is a 90 minute composition for strings, tape, and choir called "Sun Rings" by Terry Riley. It was commissioned by NASA (who suck, by the way, and here's why.) and features not only sounds recorded in space (or rather, computer interpretations of solar wind particles, ions etc. hitting Voyager's sensors) but lots of projected imagery. Neato. It's exciting to sing with the Kronos, as they are very well respected. I think I got my first Kronos CD in 1992.

Meanwhile, Doctor Who continues airing on SciFi Channel here in the US ("Aliens of London" next. I'm shaking my booty!) and the first images from the new season with David Tennant have been released. It looks amazing! The BBC site has also been updated with a lovely, non-spoiler picture of David and Billie with a "New Earth" background.

With regards to Doctor Who, I have had two interesting comments made lately - on the same day, actually - that were so similar that I wanted to relate them. First, my friend Monica, talking about the series, referred to Rose as Jo several times (she remembers watching Pertwee episodes when she was a kid and just recently started watching the new one on SciFi). Then later, Chip referred to one of the older companions as Rose! He said he liked the newest Rose best, cause she was damn sexy. I had to explain that they aren't all called Rose and he challenged me to name all the companions. Like a sad twat, I did. But that's ok - he knows every lyric to "American Pie."

Anyway what's interested for both of these is that it implies that in the popular imagination, the companions are as interchangeable as the Doctors are. Like, the Doctor changes, so the companion changes too? I don't know if that's interesting or not, but I thought I'd mention it.

Hmm well this update got a little longer than I thought it would be so I'll cut it short. I really should at least PRETEND to work, seeing as I'm sitting here getting paid and all. Ta!
