[This boy... This child is who he has willingly placed his faith in--the one who has sworn to "save" his brother, even if only from himself, who has refused to bow to the rules of logic and reality, and who has the conviction and potential to actually stand by the fantastical promises he makes--and even now he does not think he will regret that choice.
But things have changed. Itachi is not dead--at least not in here and now--and Sasuke knows the Truth. This has not changed his brother's feelings towards him, and he is not sure if it ever will, but now he is placed in a position where he does not need someone else to protect his brother because he is not there to do so, he no longer needs the wild card he has given this man-child--hidden within him hoping he would never need it, that it would never come to that--at least not in the primary capacity that he had prepared his back-up plan for. No, Naruto does not need to protect his little brother, because even though Sasuke may never forgive him--or ever willingly be in his presence again--Itachi can now protect Sasuke himself, even if he must once more do it from the shadows...as he has always done.
It is almost ironic that perhaps Uzumaki Naruto's hatred of him is deeper than his brother's would ever be. And perhaps it is jealousy--that very same emotion that eats away at his own resolve and makes him wonder if everything he has ever done is worth all that he has lost, but he will never admit to feeling it, even though his dreams may speak what his voice will not--because he knows how thick the bond between he and Sasuke will always be, and that it is something the blond can never touch, that fuels his hatred more than any sense of empathy and feelings of brotherhood he has towards Itachi's little brother.]
It seems that Death knew not what to do with me, and instead sent me here. Given the others whom have arrived, it was only a matter of time before you did as well.
