Before next week is over, I think I'll seek out the spirit of healing magic at least and try to learn from them. With no way to replenish stocks of spells, I don't want to be caught flat-footed in an emergency. If anyone wants to come with me, I'd enjoy the company ( Read more... )

...Replenish your stock of spells?

Yes. Magic on my world isn't a matter of learning spells, but more of learning to capture them and hold on to them from enemies so you can use them in the future. We call that a "stock." Since there aren't any enemies to stock spells from here, I need to find another way to retain my casting.

...How bizarre. Though not entirely dissimilar...

Apparently my world's kind of magic is almost nothing like anyone else's, so I also have some worries about its effects on enemies. So far spells have been effective, but I haven't had to use many, and no healing spells. What is your magic like?

In Gensokyo, there are strict rules set in place for magic usage in combat. These "Spell cards" must be non-fatal and cannot be used more than once, though one may possess more than one of the same spell card. My power extends well beyond this, but those are the limitations I work in so as not to over-exert myself...

Hmm, that is similar... More like a physical manifestation of what we store mentally, but with possibly the same limitations and provisos. We do have one exception to that method on our world, but it's very rare - only one or two people at a time.

The exceptions.

For us, it's something called a Sorceress - always a woman, always powerful, with the ability to cast very strong magic without the training that I and my friends have. In a way, it's much like being possessed and keeping a hold of your own control, because a Sorceress can't die without passing on her powers. How they decide who a suitable vessel is, no one knows, not even them. They're not inherently evil, but some of them have fallen to their power over time.

There is a means of regulating this, yes?

Aside from the ever-popular "keep an eye on them?"

No, there isn't. We can't even tell if an affinity and talent for magic is needed for the transfer, if it's a matter of proximity, or if it's entirely random.

...I just realized, I never said. I'm Quistis Trepe, SeeD from Balamb Garden. And you?

Seems to be an appropriate name for you. Nice to meet you.

And you as well, though I do have to wonder what you meant by "SeeD from Balamb Garden". I get the impression that you are not referring to horticulture.

No. We're actually a mercenary force.

There's not much to it. The Gardens are military academies that train SeeDs; the headmasters and commanders accept contracts from various parties to perform martial services. We have a much higher skill set than the average soldier, since we begin training so young.
