Hence leaning into Jonas' doorway with a small, wrapped package. It was nothing special -- a box of chocolates -- but she liked giving presents, and he seemed like he might appreciate getting them.
"Hi," she said. "How are you? Thinking deep thoughts?"

"I think I was," he said and laughed. Odd really, since deep thinking hadn't been encouraged back home and he tended to do that a lot here. "Hello, Didi. How are you?"

Uninvited, she wandered a step into the room. "Thinking about anything interesting?"

"And no, not really," he finally answered once the question leaked back into the forefront of his thoughts. "I was thinking about my home but it's unimportant now."
