The Unlikeliest TB Test

Apr 04, 2010 15:06

Hwaet, I needed to get a TB test so I can work at schools.

So today, I got the unlikeliest of TB tests. Without a half dozen chance events, it probably wouldn't have happened. In which case I would have gotten it later, I'm sure, but not for free.

Having re-broken sedesdraconis.com after kellan got it working again, and failing to make any progress on it, I started to look online for nearby places I could get TB tests. I started with a "tb test san jose" google search, and found a promising place (with good yelp reviews) around downtown SJ that gave the test for $20 M-F.

I almost decided to plan on going to that place. But on a whim I did a search for "tb test sunnyvale" to try to find a closer place. I didn't find one in Sunnyvale, but the search happened to turn up a place in Menlo Park that did a free clinic on Sundays 11am-2pm.

I check the time. It is now 1:20pm.

I almost decided it was a bad idea to try to rush over there at the last minute. But, then I decided, what the heck, it's not a disaster if I don't make it, so no stress. Just a bonus if I do. I put on my shoes, and run out the door. I do not bring a map or directions, cause there isn't time.

I drive, drive, drive over to Menlo Park. I successfully avoid Willow Road East and take Willow Road West, even though I want to go in a southerly direction on Willow Road.

I drive past the entrance to the clinic complex. I turn around in the blocked off driveway to an elementary school, and find clinic parking.

I walk (in the rain, in my t-shirt) following the signs to to the clinic. I arrive at the front door. It is closed and locked. Perhaps the Sunday clinic is not open on Easter Sunday? That would be reasonable. Or maybe the free clinic is not in the main entrance.

I almost return to the car and drive home. I see someone moving to my right. I decide to walk back to the car by way of the path on my right, just in case something looks like it might be the free clinic. No, that door that person was at doesn't look like a clinic. But then, a guy sitting near the door, having decided to take his break outside, despite the rain, calls out "Are you looking for the clinic?" "Yes!" "It's down that way through the door."

I find the door (tucked into a corner of the building, I never would have found it without direction). Not sure which way to go inside the building. But someone is walking by. "Which way to the free clinic?" "Down that hall and to the left."

I arrive at the registration desk, it is now 1:48pm. The supervisor at the desk says to the other people, "This is why we don't leave," and to me, "We were about to about to pack up."

I receive the unlikeliest (and free) TB test, after various paperwork and check-in, at 2:02pm. I just have to go back between 48 and 72 hours to get it read.

omg, accomplishments
