Experiments in Lettering, Day 1

Jul 28, 2008 19:49

First day of class was somewhat mixed, but good.

Apparently there was a some information sent out to students a little bit ago, but I was still ont he wait list until last week, so I didn't get it. So I didn't know to bring ink and a ruler, or that there was a $25 lab fee, plus we'd need pens that we should probably buy from him at either $8 pr $23.

I'm not sure I could stand to use the $8 pen, it's scratchy. But the $23 pens were made especially class. They're pretty nice pens. I'll probably get one. But it all made me anxious about not having supplies, and lots of money.

We started out with Classic Roman Capitals. Classic, like mimicking the letter forms on Trajan's Column, ca. AD 113. This was really cool, because we were dealing with effectively the original letterforms of the Roman Alphabet, qua Roman. The teacher discussed some of the design concepts that went into the design of the original Roman Alphabet, which is fantastic.

On the other hand, Trajan letters are extraordinarily difficult, because they are so perfect and stark in their geometry. That was kind of frustrating.

I've got the ink now (and peanut butter! another crucial supply). I thought it might be expensive, but it was really cheap, even the good stuff.
