Instead of being the "third wheel", try the more optimistic approach and use the term "unicycle".

We all feel like a third wheel at some point. It kind of sucks a little bit, but there's really nothing you can do about it.

This is why you should hang out with me. There's no reason to be a third wheel in our apartment.

I feel the same way sometimes with people...it's really sucky. I usually just get anti social and listen to my iPod though...lol.

I -completely- understand what you mean. Which is why I tend to avoid couples. But now that my roommate (who is consequently my best friend) has a new boyfriend, I feel like the only way I can hang out with her is if her boyfriend is around as well. =\ It sucks a great deal.
