Well! My extended four-month period as a man of leisure comes to an end when I start my new job tomorrow. I'd be inconsolable about the demise of my vacation and the end of summer were it not for the fact that my job is going to ABSOLUTELY ROCK. My song suggestions are likely weakened by years of not owning an MP3 player or listening to my favorites regularly, but I'll do my best: whatever else you think you might want from this list, you should for sure include Beck, 'Sweet Sunshine'! And you should at least listen to Zero 7, 'Spinning'! It's soooo gooooooood.
Seasonally speaking, I would have said Gandharvas, 'Soap Bubble and Inertia', but that's about the first day of spring, not the end of summer.
Uhhh, maybe Nitin Sawhney's 'Sunset' from 'Beyond Skin'? It's sort of about the sun setting... sun... end... summer?
Peter Gabriel's 'Blood of Eden' is about the end of paradise. It's thematically similar, and a really good song.
Pretender's 'Back on the Chain Gang', indicating the onset of school work and for you, work work as of Labor Day.
Royksopp's 'So Easy' from their 'Melody AM' album has a refrain of "who are you?" which has a contemplative, beginning of autumn, personal appraisal feel.
Maybe Simple Minds 'Don't You Forget About Me', to remind you not to forget what a sunburn feels like. In a similar vein, perhaps Bjork's 'I Miss You' from Post? Because you'll miss the summer. Maybe Tori Amos, 'Precious Things'?
The Verve's 'Bittersweet Symphony' is all about the sad passing of the sunshine and the coming harvest... of YOUR SOUL!!! (you make some money then you di-i-ie)
Wyclef Jean, 'Gone 'Till November'?
Ali Farka Toure, 'I Go Ka'?

Speaking of which, I got an email from Comstock the other day advertisting their autumn-themed CD. How much do I adore the photo on the cover, which (for me) perfectly captures both the broodiness and the playfulness of my favourite season? Witness:
