This superb Globe & Mail article perfectly expresses the way I (and a lot of other people, I suspect) feel about America, a great country that's losing its way.
i remember jon stewart once saying, "you don't have to be soft of defence or pro-terrorist or anti-American to think that we shouldn't be in Iraq." that kind of nuance seems to be missing lately.
this article rightly points out that criticism may be just as much a mark of love as of enmity. in fact, those who love are required to critically examine.
the only thing i'm not sure about is this: have american values ever been more than a theory? 'cause they've always seemed to be tainted by manifest destiny, in some form. or do i need to go back to american history 101?
have american values ever been more than a theory?
That's a really interesting question. Me, I don't know enough American history to answer it, although I would suspect that the answer is "only for brief moments, if at all." That seems to be Howard Zinn's take.
But American Values are still a great theory, and I think it behooves (yes, I just used "behooves" in a sentence) everyone to remind America to live up to it every now and then.
