I recently met Michael Berg at a death penalty protest at the Norfolk courthouse.  Mr. Berg is the father of the famed U.S. civilian beheading victim in Iraq, Nick Berg.  I'm sure most of you have seen the graphic video of Nick's death.  The elder Berg is an anti-war activist who is also against state sanctioned killing (i.e. capital punishment).  He is a very passionate man and after speaking with him for a while, I realized that this man is a great asset to our movement.  He too lost a loved one (his, however, was internationally followed and on the front page of the newspaper for weeks, and following the death of al-Zarqawi thrust again into the media spotlight).  But his anti-war and anti-death penalty stances are tied together with this same personal tragedy, and it says that you cannot be against war but pro-execution (or vice versa).

Men like Michael Berg are a rare treasure; he uses his personal tragedy to bring about positive social and political reform.

I have done little in regards to war activism, but I believe that I'm going to begin doing more.  I recently met a number of war local war activists with Catholic Worker and other groups.  Additionally, I'm gearing up to begin anti-drug prohibition activism to tie into my beliefs on capital punishment (my sister was murdered by a drug dealer).

Signed,
Ryan Roboto
