But to be fair to the judges, most of the looks were snoozers. On the other hand, this happens almost every time they do a "real people challenge." While there was quite a bit of moaning about women with actual boobs and hips, it's not the bodies that are the problem. It's the melding the taste of the client (without offending them if they have dubious taste) with your own aesthetic and making something that will please them while at the same time pleasing the judges. It is an important skill for a designer to have, but mostly the challenges end up dull.
Now let's get down to cases.
Laura - I thought the bodice looked like the model had slept in it (and was really unflattering) and I wasn’t a fan of the hemline - a big miss for me.
Anthony Ryan - Michael pretty well nailed this one of the head when he called it a superhero costume. A boring superhero. He got caught up in the story of trying to recreate a dress that had been lost and forgot about the fashion. Could find this at the mall (sounded like they already had once.)
Bert - Mall dress.
Josh - mall dress. A pretty mall dress, but really, this won?
Bryce - There were two main things wrong with this dress - the horrible belt he added that just kills the lines of the dress (what was he thinking?) and the fit. The fit was atrocious. That might have flown in one of the early seasons, but these kids can sew and fit. (I didn't mind the pockets that Nina and Michael were making so much about - I think if the fit had been better, they wouldn't have gaped so much but they were acting like there were strap on sacks at her hips and it wasn't like that) Still, it was about time for him to go.
The trouble with Bryce is he is very much a kid and he's still finding his style and that doesn't usually go too well when the designers are under the time crunch - they panic rather than edit. His
decoy collection is here. It's not horrible, but not interesting either. It's a bit Talbots meets resort wear. I like some of the jackets, and the last dress is quite pretty, but the bottom halves tend toward contrived and awkward or boring.
Kimberly - I thought this was really cute, the ruffling at the top saves it from being a mall outfit. I wish she hadn't styled her model with her hair down because I think the neckline would have worked much better with hair up and out of the way. It also suffers in the back from giant zipper syndrome -it's a rare outfit where I think you want to see the zipper
Olivier, or as he shall be known from now on, Captain Mopeypants. Olivier, you need to get a grip. I realize you are only interested in an androgynous aesthetic, but you are in a competition for designing women's clothing and women have BOOBS. Anyway, cute Olivier-ish top that is quite flattering for all those boobs and boring pants.
Anya - Again with the teacher's pet. And what was up with all the praising the
uniqueness of the silhouette of this look? It was
remarkably similar to Viktor's from the avant garde challenge. (Mind you, I don't think Anya copied him or anything like that, it was just they seemed to be very much overpraising her for a look that had a lot of features of a dress they judged only a few days ago) Anyway this was Anya being Anya, but in a Carol-Burnett-does-Gone-with-the- Wind-and-makes-a-dress-from-curtains way.
Viktor - Robbed again! This was a great outfit with an interesting color combination and as much as I hate sheer in tops that are worn in the daytime, I think it really works here. If I ruled project runway, you would have won.
