Ryutaro just stared at the phone and slowly processing what the voice mail just said, was Keito cheating on him? And of all people it was with his best friend Yuto, but weren’t Yuto going out with Yamada. As he prepared to leave the room the door slowly creaked open and revealed a smiling Keito with two cups of the tea he’d prepared.
“Ryu? I’m sorry did you wait long?” asked Keito who waited for the younger one’s response, but getting no response he walked over to his boyfriend’s side and held out his hand before putting down the tray aside, only to get his hand smacked away by his now scowling lover.
“What’s the matter Ryu?” asked Keito who was puzzled by his younger lover’s behaviour
“I know you and Yuto are best friend and everything” started Ryutaro “But you know I can’t compete with him”
Ryutaro pushed Keito aside and run out of the house ignoring the shout of Keito missing the desperation in Keito’s voice and then suddenly ‘bang’ everything was dyed black. A white falling feather was the last thing Ryutaro saw before everything faded to nothing.
*flash back*
A young Ryutaro was out when he noticed a bird with an injured wing preventing it from flying, and with a handkerchief the young Ryutaro began wrapping the wings. But being clumsy as a little boy he’d “accidentally” wrapped it too tight crushing the bird and accidentally suffocating the poor creature.
The chibi hamster boy cried his poor eyes out saying sorry to the heaven and hoping to be forgiven by the little bird.
Ever since then Ryutaro thought that bird hated and blamed him and he was never ever going to be forgiven by the sin he’d committed. Ryutaro’s eyes burst opened recalling his nostalgic dream before touching his aching head and remembered the events and getting hit by a car.
“This … is my room” thought Ryutaro “Why? I remembered getting run over by a car … then nothing”
Ryutaro thought he’d just dreamt of getting hit but that soon was dropped as he noticed he was wearing the same clothes, and the red substance that he recognized as his blood decorated him.
“What’s this? A feather?” thought Ryutaro
He looked around and his attention fell on his calendar that said 22nd and if he remembered it right it was today that he’d gotten hit, the hamster boy started drawing a conclusion of somehow returning back in time few hours his incident. Maybe he was being a given a second chance of correcting his mistake, maybe the bird didn’t really hate him after all.
Even so Ryutaro didn’t waste a second before being hot in his toes and went straight to a store and picking out his last present to his boyfriend. Maybe this will help amend things when he’s gone, this time Ryutaro will make a clean cut and let Keito go. And with that in mind he marched to the house of his soon to be ex-boyfriend.
When he arrived at his destination he took a deep breath before knocking on the door, and with time the door slowly revealed Keito but Ryutaro noticed that something was off about the way Keito smiled at him but ignored it and went in. Keito excused himself for a bit to prepare some tea and snacks for both of them and as soon as he’s out of sight the oh so familiar voice mail came. Ryutaro gripped his wrapped present tightly in his fingers while listening to the message.
“Keito…It’s Yuto” started the voicemail “When are we going to tell Ryutaro ‘that’?”
Then Keito came into the room and Ryutaro looked at his watch and thought it was time, he slowly got up and took the tray from Keito and placing it down. He opened his lover’s hand and inserted the wrapped present.
“This is from me to you” smiled Ryutaro
When Keito was about to say something Ryutaro pressed his lips against his preventing him from doing so, it was a quick chaste kiss and Ryutaro grazed his hands tracing every dent in Keito’s face before pulling away.
“Be happy” said Ryutaro and found himself walking the same path as that time, he checked his watch his end was nearing. He noticed a white bird sitting on top the tree that he hadn’t noticed before. 5…4…3…2…1… Ryutaro closed his eyes shot and waited for the impact that never came and remembered being pushed gently and suddenly a scream was heard. He turned around and noticed the car that had hit him before and a person on the ground.
His heart pounded as he went nearer to the scene and gasp escaped from his lip; on the ground was his boyfriend Keito. No Ryutaro thought this wasn’t what supposed to happen he was the one who should be lying there not Keito. As the ambulance came and took Keito away Ryutaro fell on his knees.
“Maybe…I’m still hated by that bird” cried Ryutaro
It took quite a while for Ryutaro to calm down and his feet automatically placed him in front of Keito’s hospital room. He gently knocked and when he heard that same gentle voice he slid the door open and only to be met by Keito. By luck Keito just had a few broken ribs and a broken leg.
“Why? Why did you push me away? It was supposed to be…” before Ryutaro could finish he felt Keito hugging him and felt hot tears falling down his boyfriend’s face.
“No…It was hard enough seeing you get hit and die in front of me once” cried Keito “I’m not letting it happen a second time Ryutaro”
“You mean…I already died?” asked Ryutaro
“Before…you suddenly run out just like today and I tried calling you back but you got run over … and… you died” explained Keito who seemed to calming himself down.
“Then the phone call and ‘that’?” asked Ryutaro
“It…that was a surprise for you actually…” said Keito “Did you think I was cheating on you and most of all with my best friend who’s already have a boyfriend?”
“I don’t know you tell me” said Ryutaro
Slowly Ryutaro found himself smiling and he inched closer to his injured boyfriend and hugged him, and outside the window Ryutaro saw a white bird soaring towards the sky. The bird didn’t hate him after all, he was forgiven and the bird gave him a second chance to correct his mistake and he was glad for it.
