Today's topic at
14valentines is
arts and entertainment.
My post for today is dedicated to my favorite female singer/songwriters.
This first singer/songwriter falls somewhere between folk and pop. She writes some really poignant songs and some very catchy ones. This song, one of my favorites of hers, falls into both categories.

Dar Williams - "As Cool As I Am"
I don't know what you saw, I want somebody who sees me.
I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women.

This next artist, to put it simply, kicks ass. She's a rockin' guitar player, a fierce feminist and the founder of her own label, Righteous Babe Records.

Ani DiFranco - "Shameless"
i'll take off my disguise
the mask you met me in
'cuz i got something
for you to see

I could have picked any number of songs by this next artist, because she's simply divine, but this one is one of my favorites of hers -- the rich piano line slays me.

Tori Amos - "Tear in Your Hand"
I tell you there's pieces of me you've never seen

This next duo is a couple of lesbians and folk rock icons, and I once had the privilege of seeing them live -- great music, great harmonies. The song below is my favorite of theirs.

Indigo Girls - "Galileo"How long till my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light

This next song is positively guaranteed to get me up out of my chair, dancing around the room. This singer has an amazingly powerful voice -- listen to her belt this thing out!
Joan Osborne - Right Hand Man (another vid with embedding disabled)
I'm wired and I'm tired
And I'm grinnin' like a fool

And finally, a pianist who writes gorgeous, piano-driven songs and has a pure, clear voice.
It occurs to me that the lyrics in this next song could be read as not very feminist, but the melody is so beautiful, with the interplay of strings and piano, that I can't resist choosing it.

Who are your favorite female musicians? I am always looking for new music, so please leave me some suggestions!
Also, if anyone wants any of these songs, just let me know and I'll upload them for you.
