14 Valentines, Day 7

Feb 07, 2009 21:23

Halfway there! Today's topic at 14valentines is domestic violence.

I don't have anything specifically geared toward this topic, so here are some women-centric fic recs (all HP). Unlike the ones from the other night, most of these are non-porny. ;-) As with the the other set, most some of these have been recced here before and others are new.

In the Turning by casirafics (Remus/Hermione, heavy R, character death)
I just reread this one to see if it was as powerful as I'd remembered it being, and...yeah. It made me cry all over again. The intricate plot centers around Hermione using her Time Turner in a dizzying series of chronological jumps (all in the service of the Order) against the backdrop of an increasingly oppressive war. I love the way the author has drawn the characters -- a strong but human Hermione carrying out her duty even as she frays around the edges, and a Remus defined by his bravery and quiet dignity. The last scene destroys me every time.
**The author has done commentary on this fic here.

Divinest Sense by purple_chalk (Hermione/Luna, PG)
I adore Luna, and this is one of the best portrayals I've ever seen of her in fic. The author captures her inimitable mix of strangeness and quirky, backhanded wisdom. This is a short, happy-making fic. :-)

Crossroads by lionille (Neville/Hermione, PG)
What a quiet, lovely story this fic is, as so many of lionille's stories are. I invite those of you who worry about the lack of strong, believable female characters in the HP fandom to check out this Hermione, who is self-sufficient and sharply intelligent but also vulnerable in a way that makes her not weak, but human. And the author's Neville is a thing of delight.

This Absolutely Brilliant Thing by magnetic_pole (Lavender/Parvati, unrated)
I love fanfic that takes minor characters (or caricatures?) from canon and brings them to real, three-dimensional life, and magnetic_pole does that here. This is a warm portrayal of teenage friendship, the kind of friendship where you stay up late into the night talking and giggling, but it also explores deeper issues of race and culture and sexuality.

Five Women Who Hate Fleur Delacour by snegurochka_lee (Gabrielle, Narcissa, Molly, Tonks, Minerva, Luna, Fleur, PG-13/R)
This is a marvelous character study, not just of Fleur but of the other women in her life. Carefully constructed and very insightful into the ways women all too often undermine each other.

Five Women Neville Longbottom has Loved and Lost by gyzym (Neville/Luna, Neville/Ginny, Neville/Hannah, PG-13)
The author does what's so difficult to do in writing about loss, and that's to handle grief in a sensitive but unsentimental way. The first part of this is my favorite -- I love the way she's captured the essence of Luna!

A Letter from the Enemy by knitmeapony (Pansy/Ginny, R, slightly sappy and very sapphic)
This story is short and very satisfying. It's about two women, both strong and believable characters, but more than that it's about the experience of being in love, the kind of love where you fight and drive each other crazy but can't help coming back for more.

See something you like? Leave the author a little love!
