So I've been on a bit of a Remus/Draco kick lately and thought I'd round up a few of the fics that I've been reading the past couple of days. I guess it's kind of a random pairing, but something about it really works for me; the characters are such opposites in age, experience and temperament that it's fun to see how authors can bring them together.
Compiling this list took approximately eight years since I had to reread every story as I went. ;-) Hope you enjoy!
The Fields of St. Herve by
arsenicjade
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Draco's a bit down on his luck.
My Comments: I've recced this story before, but my Remus/Draco list would be incomplete without it.
arsenicjade has such a gentle touch -- nothing is rushed, the dialogue is believable and unforced, and the main pairing develops slowly and naturally. Draco and Remus are wonderful here, but the minor characters (Harry, Hermione, Millicent) are just as important to the fic. Read -- and enjoy. :-)
The House Guest by
wildestranger
Rating: NC-17
Summary: None given, but here's the original request: Plotty romance sounds ideal. I'd love a Remus/Draco post-HBP forced bonding that doesn't hinge on Remus being a werewolf. For the other things on your list of writing preferences, I am all about the fuckbuddies but secretly more, sarcasm, hurt/comfort, angst, rimming, frottage, and anal sex. If you can fit virginity or blackmail (but not Remus or Draco blackmailing the other, at least not too seriously) in there, as well, then go for it.
My Comments: This was one of my favorite stories from the recent
reversathon. The forced marriage/bonding is a well-worn cliche in HP fic, but
wildestranger breathes new life into it here. Both Remus and Draco are outcasts that the Ministry doesn't quite know what to do with, so they're thrown together and left to fend for themselves. The fic is beautifully paced, and the ending is just right.
At the Round Earth's Imagined Corners by
geoviki
Rating: NC-17
Summary: None given except for the original request: "a bit of Remus/Draco and cleverness."
My Comments: Stuck at Grimmauld Place together, Remus and Draco seem to be getting along fine until Remus's things start disappearing. A unique but believable take on the pairing.
Shelter the Foe and
Devil You Know by
switchknife
Rating: NC-17 for both
Summary: 'Trust not yourself; but your defects to know, / Make use of ev'ry friend--and ev'ry foe.'
My Comments: Both stories are full of visceral description and subtle shifts in power and emotion. Remus takes Draco prisoner, but by the end it's not so clear just who's really in charge. Darker than most of the fics on this list, but masterfully written.
Flicker by
emmagrant01
Rating: NC-17
Summary: After the events of HBP, Draco is in hiding, presumed dead by the Wizarding World. When Remus offers to hide him for a few days, the connection they forge takes them both by surprise.
My Comments: Love this one. Draco's such a teenager, and quite IC -- angry and petulant and horny; Remus is patient and kind but more than capable of dealing with him. The story builds organically to a lovely, bittersweet conclusion.
Red (Spaces in Between) by
hansbekhart
Rating: PG-13
Summary: After the war, no one is whole. Some people need to run to find themselves. Some turn to others for solace. In a place where Remus once found a home, now he rebuilds a life.
My Comments: I find the pairing here to be nearly overshadowed by the setting (and that's not a bad thing). Lyrical descriptions capture the heat and colors of Hong Kong, a gorgeous backdrop to the slow, quiet development of Remus and Draco's relationship. Reads like a poem.
Midst of Life by
anise_anise
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Remus offers Draco shelter during the war. Harry isn't pleased.
My Comments: This is the first story I read with this pairing, and I still go back and read it from time to time. The writing is a little rough in some spots, but what I love about this fic is the powerful emotions -- between Remus and Draco, and also between Remus and Harry.
The Boy Who Cried Wolf by
ishafel
Rating: None given -- I'd say R
Summary: Remus teaches Draco not to tell lies.
My Comments: I feel almost dirty for liking this one, but like it I do. The warnings -- chan and spanking -- tell you most of what you need to know. Remus is clearly a bastard here, but the author leaves it up to you to decide just how innocent Draco is.
Mail-Order Husband by
florahart
Rating: NC-17
Summary: None given
My Comments: This one's just fun. Draco special-orders a husband, intending to get Harry but winding up with...Remus. Who's straight. Oops! Note that there is a hint at future MPreg in here, which I despise, but it's quite easy to ignore. :-)
Worthy Prey by
mousapelli
Rating: NC-17
Summary: None given.
My Comments: Short and sexy. The first line sums it up pretty well: "Remus Lupin loved the chase." I go back to this one for the humor, the sex scene (which hits a few of my personal kinks) and the fabulous ending.
Want more Remus/Draco goodness? There are several other fics in
my memories, as well as a wealth of fics
here and
here (scroll down a bit).
