It's taken me ages to pick today's fic because everything this author has written is amazing, and I couldn't decide which to rec! So, you know, if you like this one, you should go to her mems and read everything there. She writes Brian/Justin but she also writes gen stuff about most of the other characters, and it's all excellent.
But! For today I picked this one:
A Superhero by
mojokidCharacters: Hunter, Brian
Rating: None given (I'd say maybe PG-13?)
Warnings: None
Summary: A Hunter and Brian type ficlet. Post 414.
My Comments:
I was always sort of entertained by the Hunter-Brian moments on the show, but until I read this fic I hadn't really thought much about the parallels between these two (though Brian hints at them in 314 when he says "I've had a mother; it's a fate worse than birth").
The story is from Hunter's POV and beautifully captures the sense of distance and isolation he feels from many of the people around him, because of both his past experiences and his disease. In this story the author shows that Brian isn't just some hot guy Hunter wants to sleep with, but someone whom he desperately wants -- needs, perhaps -- to look up to. The writing here is sharp and clean and quite powerful.
Excerpt:
He knows Brian had cancer even though no one tells him anything, because the apartment is a lot smaller than Michael and Ben seem to think it is, and if he can hear them fucking all night long, he can hear Michael saying words like radiation and cancer and god, Ben, what if, as well.
Cancer sounds bad, sounds worse than HIV, kind of. It sounds more terminal.
He knows it isn’t, yeah. He knows nothing’s more terminal apart from maybe getting your head blown off. But now when he sees Brian he studies him, tries to see some trace of it on him, if it’s left a mark. But there’s nothing. He looks the same. He looks hot.
It’s like when Hunter looks in the mirror. He can’t see anything, but he knows it’s there.
If you enjoy, please leave the author some feedback!
And now, I'm going to do this crazy "African Dance Workout" tape I got from the library. It kicked my butt the first (and second) time through, but this time I'm determined to learn the steps. ;-)
