“’ello, Anna, love… want to go for a ride?”

Liam Connolly stroked the golden mane of his most beloved granian, and spoke softly to her. She calmed him, giving a gentle neigh of agreement. The clouds were low today - they could go flying. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply, trying to clear of thoughts…

Trying to clear his thoughts of that bloody woman, and what she was doing to him.

Heaving a sigh of frustration, he mounted the granian and patted her neck - she started with a slow trot, taking a small walk around the stable and the green hills, it was their usual routine. And then, she took off into a gallop, spreading her wings and soaring into the clouds.

His red curls, filled with dirt and sweat, were swept back from his eyes, and up from his neck. It was both exhilarating and peaceful. There was nothing like it. Now that he was up here, he could think properly.

He’d never let himself… feel anything before. Not like this. He’d had all the girls he wanted. It wasn’t entirely physically, but it was always sensual, sexual. There wasn’t this anger in his veins when a woman didn’t speak to him or a pain in his chest when she cast her eyes on him in disappointment. There wasn’t emptiness when she was gone and light-headedness when she was near.

This one had done something to him. It was dangerous, he could feel it.

He closed his eyes against the racing wind, and let the granian fly however she wished.

Oh, and how his sister would react if she knew he’d let himself fall. He’d never hear the end of it. She would give him one of those superior smirks, and her pale eyes would twinkle with laughter. Like most thoughts of his sister, it was both endearing and annoying.

To fall.

He remembered the time, years ago, when he’d been thrown from a granian, hitting the ground and injuring his ankle. Helpless, dependent on someone else to rescue him. And even after being healed, there was always a weakness…

That’s how it would be, he knew. He could not be himself anymore if he let himself do this. He could not stand on his own any longer, and he would always have that soft spot.

But if he did not do it…

The granian gave a happy neigh, and Liam smiled. It was good being up hear, nice to think freely…
But he knew what he was really doing.

Exactly what she had accused him of.

“…running away.”

When he was on the ground, he was with her. He couldn’t stay away from her, he didn’t know what he was doing, or why he was doing it, except it was what he needed and wanted.

Up here, it was logical. He could put the pieces together, or he could take them apart and look at them. He could make a decision. But what is a decision made worth, when it is made away from all that matters.

He could ground himself. He could seek her out, he could kiss her, he could hold her, make love to her. And he could let himself fall…

“We’ll see,” he whispered to the wind.

He would fly another while. Just for the freedom.

And then he would go to her.

“We’ll see.”
