Snow fell heavily as Rose made her way down the street of Hogsmeade for the first time since she’d started Hogwarts. Everything that surrounded her was new and fascinating, but she could hardly pay a moment’s attention to any of it. Nothing, not even warm temptation of butterbeer from The Three Broomsticks or glittering towers of sweets at Honeydukes, could distract her from the feeling that was cause for impish grin that tugged at the corner of her lips. She was blushing with giddiness as the butterflies in her stomach fluttered with anticipation and she practically skipped across the cobblestone towards her destination.
'Rose? Rose! Where are you off to?' a familiar voice called from behind her.
Rose gritted her teeth and took a deep breath as she stopped and turned to see James approaching her with a slight jog.
'Oh, you know, first time in Hogsmeade,’ she said casually with a bright smile. ‘I thought I'd explore a bit.'
'On your own?' James asked uncertainly.
'I like the solitude,' she said with a shrug.
'I told your dad I'd keep an eye out for you.'
'Just like you told your dad you'd keep an eye out for Albus?' Rose said with a raised eyebrow. 'Where is Albus, anyway?'
'Oh, he's off... doing something,' James replied unsurely, scratching the back of his neck as he did so while Rose stole an impatient glance at the minute hand on her watch.
'Mmhm,' Rose replied sceptically. 'Look, James, I'll be fine. It's just Hogsmeade. It's not like I'm exploring Knockturn Alley or someplace awful like that.'
'Maybe someone could go along with you. What about Dominique, or Roxanne?'
Rose rolled her eyes. 'They have their own friends to be going around with, they don't want to be bothered with me. Besides,' she hesitated for effect and then spoke timidly, ‘I don't really like doing this sort of thing with others....'
'Why not?' James asked with concern.
'Because,' Rose replied. She let out exhaled loudly and dramatically. 'You know how I go off and get all excited about things, and nobody else seems to find them interesting. I just want to go and - and - relish in that fascination without feeling like I have to move on before whoever I'm with with tires of it.'
'Ah,' James said. 'Alright, alright. Sorry, Rose. I just... I've just been worried about you. You always seem to be sneaking off to be on your own these days. I thought maybe you were... depressed or something.'
Rose laughed at this, and James grinned, 'Go on, then. Have fun exploring.' He turned around and jogged off back towards The Three Broomsticks.
‘Finally!’ Rose exclaimed to herself and shook her head as she quickened her pace in the direction of the Shrieking Shack. When she arrived, she found him standing perfectly still with patience. A soft, subtle smile came to his lips at the sight of her. Rose’s heart pounded. It took her breath away, the elegance with which he held himself, the delicacy with which he displayed his emotions.
‘Scorpius’ she said breathlessly, ‘Sorry, I took so long. Bloody cousins won’t leave me alone.’
‘Watch your language, darling,’ Scorpius said, pressing her bottom lip with his thumb and leaning into her.
She grinned and watched the white snow fall around them and land in his white blond hair. Their lips touched, and the butterflies fluttered.
