Prologue // First // Second

The party returned to it’s previous vibe, joy and laughter all around. Food and drinks were passed around, the giggles and laughters run around the hall, and music rung on everyone’s ears.

Queen Jaejoong was more at ease, smiling gracefully to everybody and sometimes chuckled on the jokes made by her subordinates. She sat with ease, her jade robe gleams bright while she leaned to her small table. Changmin was stifling laughs, as she was having fun tickling and cuddling and having fun with the little Pikachu on her lap, the one that had caused much chaos earlier in the evening as a gift from the stranger, gazing at her straight from across the hall.

The so-called stranger, which happens to be Yunho, was totally oblivious to the fact that his actions was really apparent. No one blamed him, as the princess’ beauty was really hard to ignore. He barely touched his meal, as he spent every waking hours in the party to gaze and plurge himself on the beauty. A nudge on his ribs pulled him back again to consciousness.

“Ah, Minister Kangin, I’m really sorry to bother you.”

“It’s okay, Prince Yunho. Your brother has been tended to the best medical attention and is now put to rest. Fortunately his brain and mind or body suffers no serious injury, only his hair will be a little, well, curly, we can say.” The minister ended with a laugh that Yunho replied the same. Kangin excused himself and Yunho returned his gaze to the empty spot next to the Queen.

Before he even had time to be shocked that the princess he adored so much was gone, a gong sounded through the hall. Everybody quickly elicited an “Aaah…” and lanterns up above on the roof slowly fades into darkness. The room was throwned into a dimension of darkness and silence, one that caught Yunho by surprise. He can’t even see his hand in the depth of the black, and his senses brought into gear. He quickly tensed himself and stayed in place, frozen in a panther’s reflex.

The gong sounded again, and a candle was lit on the far end of the room.

The gong sounded again, and the candle took a step forward.

The gong sounded again, and again, and again.

Slowly the figure in the dark moved, every graced step with every gong beat. The rhythm of the gong was serene and haunting, arch of soundwaves resonanced with the walls one, beat, at, a, time. There were no signs of haste or hurry, as the figure who held the candle was moving in its own snail pace, a carefully placed step with every gong beat that comes once a minute with its body stayed rigid on the same level of height, no matter where its feet is.

To someone who was raised in a situation where time is always saved to its best and things were done as fast as possible, the whole ordeal was a whole new level of torture for Yunho. It was beyond him to sit through another ceremony of the Serpentinean people, especially one that gives him nothing to do but silence and self-ponder. The others were doing it perfectly, their gazes were held silence at the figure wading through the room, but he was fighting with himself against the urge to start tapping finger on the table and clicking heels.

Until he saw the figure who held the candle, the focus of the ceremony.

It was Changmin.

To be more precise, it was Changmin, in a sapphire tube top and a long train of blue with her long streams of black hair tight into a bun above her head. Her neck and shoulders were bare, revealing the golden luscious skin that made Yunho’s inner boy kicked into high gear of imaginations. But the look on her face was not one for such dirty images, as the serene and grace written there was meant to carry everyone’s attention not to her body, rather what she is going to do when she reached her spot in the middle of the room.

The gong that had accompanied her every step gave a final beat, as she lowered herself and the candle to the floor, facing the Queen directly. Yunho couldn’t see what the Queen looks like because of the darkness, but his attention was diverted back to the sleek and slim figure of grace, standing in the middle of the room with perfect calmness and elegance.

Her hand slowly moved from the side of her body, as she started to ballet with the gong rhythming her every move. Every step was unhurried, her hands wade through air making gestures like crafting a thread and her feet grazed the floor like the moonlight touched the calm waters of a lake.

And she opened her mouth, as her hands waved across her heart.

Ana kidung

A song, a prayer

rumeksa ing wengi,

glorious in the night

teguh ayu luputa ing lara,

escapes all ailments

luputa bilahi kabeh,

disasters all missed

the golden voice that had rung from Changmin’s throat took Yunho by the collar. He was instantly charmed and his eyes transfixed itself on the dancer in front of him while his logics took a hike and went missing from the room. His heart bumped faster than millions of war drums, filling his eardrums with nerves while the room was still silent as the song was taking form.

jin setan datan purun,

demon and evil disgusts

paneluhan tan ana wani,

no afflictions dared touch

miwah panggawe ala,

so does evil acts.

He can’t even see, his eyes were starting to blackened out.

Then he realized, this was a magic spell that she had sung.

His body quickly tensed and trembled, much against his will.

gunane wong luput,

charms mistaken

geni anemahan tirta

like fire doused with water

maling adoh tan ana

no thief shall come close

ngarah ing kami,

and prey on us

guna duduk pan sirna.

All hex, begone

And as she closed her dazzling spell, slowly the candle in her hand flickered, and the lanterns up above returned to life. The dimming of the candle took a moment of darkness before the lanterns valored the room with its lights, and the center of the room had been empty with the candle’s disappearance. Changmin was gone in a flash of darkness.

The New Year’s party is over.

///

The sun wasn’t up yet, and boredom in his room took place, so Yunho decided to take another walk around the complex. As he opened the door, the early dawn wind hit his face with a cold freshness, tingling his spine and shivered his body. He took his robe and strolled outside, leaving his snoring brother behind.

He inhaled the air, filling his lungs with winter cold and sparks of energy. He strolled around the hallways, gazing up to the sky as the moon started to falter and the stars were starting to dim. He engross himself in the pleasure of the scenery, touching the trees and when he turned, he found himself in pure and utter shock as a dazzling young woman stood before him, looking as flushed as he is.

///

Changmin had performed beautifully, her mother praised. But after such a draining performance that took toll on not only his body but his mind, she wanted some rest. As the spell was a blessing spell, she had to act out strong and carry her voice as gentle as possible, different than with war spells that relies on the sharpness of the words rather than accent or voice tone. She took a walk before she goes to bed, letting the cool air bring peace to her skin and the last blankets of night should be able to recharge her magic energy a bit.

She walked out of her room after assuring her twin brother-slash-bodyguard that she would be safe and back before the sun hits her head. She enjoyed night walks, times where she can be alone and left to gaze on mundane things that she had never felt, such as humanity and green beans. She left her mind back at her room and she let the images of peace in the garden entertain her will, lulling her to feelings of comfort and safety.

But then she took a turn and almost cursed her luck for pitting her back with the handsome man from earlier in the night. Almost.

///

“S-So…”

“Um…”

The two stammered, and they let a nervous chuckle out.

“I-I’ll just go the other way.” Yunho finally let out, but even Changmin didn’t know what she had replied. Or why did she reply it that way.

“Wait!” And she, again, almost cursed her luck when the handsome man actually turned, hearing her voice. Again, almost.

“W-Will you ta-take a walk with m-me?” She stammered, trembled and blushed extremely.

“O-Of course.” Yunho couldn’t believe his luck. He quickly added, “It would be my pleasure.” And let out a nervous smile.

Changmin almost wet herself seeing the smile. Almost.

But she know it herself that she had already fallen for the guy. No more almost.

///

And as she gazed into the two young lovebirds, with one of it being her daughter, she couldn’t help but to chuckle.

“Blossom, my daughter.”

She couldn’t help to stop the single tear that rolled down her snow cheeks.

Her daughter will be gone in a few more years, deep in the hands of that handsome young prince.

She couldn’t help to stop the barrage of tears that stormed her snow cheeks.

But she smiled from the heart when she sees them.

And blessed for them, praying their threads will be together forever.

///

“Umm…”

“Yes, princess?”

“I don’t think we’ve introduced each other.”

Yunho let out a laugh, breaking the ice between them as they walked in the park under the leftover of the night, the darkest time of the night. Changmin let out a chuckle, ridiculed at what she just said.

“Well, I mean, y-you know who I am, but…”

Yunho took Changmin’s hand, his gentleman side came out. “Jung Yunho, Prince of The Human Kingdom of Grandana.” And he kissed her hand. “At your service.”

Changmin almost passed out with glee, but she remarked the origin of the young man and it was strong enough to bring back her backbone. And also something else she wouldn’t have to let out, had she have the choice.

“I’d say that’s a 10 point on the cheesiness scale.”

Oops. Her snark came out. She almost slap herself to death for saying that, but the prince was only taken aback for a moment before laughing again.

Yunho knew the princess was famed for her deeds, both in military and domestic areas. He knew she wouldn’t be a normal, easy to please crowd, so he took a good-natured side appeal with the princess through comedy, which is always the key to a woman’s heart.

“10 out of what, princess?” He replied.

“On a scale from 1 to 5.” She calmly stated, smiling as Yunho chuckled.

“You seem to hate cheesiness.”

“Not really. I just don’t like it when they think they can easily romance me with such useless perks.”

“Who?”

“Well, generally speaking, men.” She stared at Yunho’s eyes with an icy coldness. Being the good nobleman, he was unaffected and continued to smile. Unknown to him, he passed Changmin’s first test.

“I assure you, princess, I’m a different specimen than the rest.”

“That’s what they all say before they ran out of the gates, crying their eyes out.”

“I don’t really think crying is a good idea for a man.”

Ooh, manly act, Changmin thought.

“Especially in this weather. Their tears will freeze in their eyes.”

Changmin laughed, she was taken very off-guard when the joke came, not expecting the punch line would come as easily as that. Her shoulders trembled in her streams of giggles and she lost control of herself for a while.

Yunho had to fight all his heart to stop himself from lunging at the extremely cute girl and kiss her. He decided to took another step on romancing his dreamgirl.

“Shall we sit over there?” He gestured to a stone bench, submerged under the heavy blankets of snow. Changmin nodded, his tongue was still tied from too much laughing and Yunho quickly scooted over, removed the pile of snow with his hands. He carefully lead Changmin to sit on the little bench before he eased himself on it.

“So…”Yunho tried to start another conversation but he bumped his shoulder with the princess’, which was on equal heights, and the two of them blushed and stammered again.

“W-Well, what do you think about our country? Have we treated you well?” The princess took a political turn on the topics, testing Yunho’s diplomacy skill on a different water.

“I find it very interesting, princess. Your people’s culture and tradition are very well-preserved, yet I find that they have no trouble relating to current issues happening on the earth. I have to say I am very impressed by your people.” Yunho easily answered the question with his impeccable smooth talk and diplomatic skills he learned over the years being the crown prince. Changmin somehow found that irritatingly hot. She pinched herself in the thigh to stop her dirty mind before running on high gear.

“May I ask something?” Yunho popped a question, catching her off-guard again.

“Yes, by all means. It would be my pleasure.” The princess retaliated quickly.

“Would you mind explaining about the song you’ve just sang on the party?”

Yunho noticed the slight calmness that shown itself on Changmin’s blushing face.

“The song tells of a blessing, one that we sing before the first sunrise of the new year to repel all bad will, evil beings and demons and protects us for the year. A person of respected status on a household sings the song for the rest of the family and the members will follow the song silently.

“Since the song is also a spell, higher magical energies are also needed when singing the song, so sometimes the young sings for the family instead of the elders. That’s one of the reason that allowed me to sing just now.”

Yunho was amazed, and Changmin was blushing so hard. She looked at the handsome face, gaping his mouth in pure wonder at what she just said, and she chuckled, loud enough to bring sanity back into Yunho.

“Oh, sorry about that. And the dance?”

“Because I want to. Usually they just sit in a circle and sing until sunrise. I wanted to dance so…” She trailed off, feeling embarassed. “They let me do it, says it’s okay.”

“It was beautiful.”

“Oh.” Her powerlessness against the man kills her from the inside, though secretly she felt so excited being…weak. “T-Thank you.”

They chatted again for a while, more laughs and chuckles were emitted, filling the air with glee until a shine went through the sky, making the two of them looked upwards and noticing the dimly scarlet sky.

“Oh, morning. I promised I’d go to bed when the sun comes!” Changmin exclaimed in shock. Yunho quickly reacted.

“Let’s go back then.” And he stood up and brushed some snow of his attire. Changmin quickly got herself up. And that was the time her tiredness took toll, as her knees suddenly went weak.

She yelped, her face was heading straight to the snow under her if not for a pair of strong hands that pulled her in it’s chest.

Yunho found himself gazing back to the princess’ eyes, this time on a dangerously small amount of distance while his hands is safely holding the princess tight

Changmin found herself tasting the breath of the handsome prince from afar that had just grabbed her into his arms and made hers latched into his back.

Yunho found himself doing probably the most riskiest and yet most romantic thing in his whole life by leaning forward.

Changmin had her first kiss under the first rays of the first sunrise in the new year.
