Helpful Hearts - Help the victims of Katrina

Sep 02, 2005 11:09

A fundraiser of sorts, to raise money for the victims of the hurricane Katrina.
This disaster is really hard for me to ignore, considering the fact that my name is Katrina (and I've never been so sick of hearing it). This set of textures was made for the purpose of encouraging people to donate to any sort of charity. I am stealing this idea from nardasarmy who did a similar post found here.
I don't want credit for these. I want everyone to donate money or anything else to a charity group in exchange for this set. I don't care how much it is. And if you are not able to donate money find another way. When the tsunami hit my mom, sister, and I made blankets to send over seas. I know different places are collecting canned food and the like. Anything helps.

The following is a list of different charities that oulangi and easter gathered and put together.

Check out oulangi too, because she has up-to-date info and links there.

When you donate to ANY charity... know that you must stipulate what that donation is for if you don't want it to go to their general charity fund. Be sure that if you are donating for relief in New Orleans that you make that distinction when donating. - Thanks for the tip bystandersunion

ANIMALS:
In a disaster like this, animals, just like humans, go through extreme trauma and need immediate help. Many owners evacuating either could not take pets or thought they'd be back in 24 hours and left them behind. Thousands of shelter animals were simply abandoned. CNN's Jeanne Mazure describe the misery of thousands of barking dogs, waiting for *someone* to rescue them as the only sound she could hear in the long nights. Obviously rescue workers have their hands full with saving people.

The Audubon Zoo animals appear to also be in dire straits. At least some animals were left behind - CNN reposted three seals swept from their pen into the streets. Two died, a third was shot by the police after having been dosed with water for 24 hours by volunteers because they simply had no way to help the animal.

North Shore Animal League - North Shore has already started going in and rescuing animals

"In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, The HSUS has begun a massive relief effort to rescue animals and assist their caregivers in the disaster areas. Our highly trained Disaster Animal Response Teams are moving into Mississippi today to begin a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort."

The Episcopal Disaster Relief Fund is currently accepting donations to aid those who were in the path of Hurricane Katrina.

There's also PetSmart Charities and The Humane Society of the United States, both of which are now also concentrating on helping the animals in the gulf coast region.
