May Ham

A certain Mayhem has been on my mind, and I can't help but remember first hearing that word as a kid.

However, I heard it as "May Ham."

I wasn't sure exactly what it was, but from the context I knew it was something bad.

But it made as much sense as "March Bacon" to my young mind.

I heard the name of a month, and a pork product.

Still, I never asked anyone what it was, and why it was so bad. It just was another one of those things that kind of confused me.

You might be wondering where I even heard "May Ham."

I'm guessing I heard it the most from the show M.A.S.K.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.A.S.K.

That was the first thing that came to my mind.

"Mask and May Ham."

If I actually got into the show, I probably could have figured it out, or gotten a better idea.

Anyway, I have a feeling that word is going to be making a comeback.

That or I am just going to be seeing it everywhere.

The other day at the dollar store, I saw a lip gloss called "Melon Mayhem"

And it had to come home with me. (My sister's right, I am a marketer's dream) It's actually pretty tasty. I like having Mayhem glistening on my lips! Keeping them soft and smooth. Hee.

However, that is a very odd thing to name lip balm.

It made me wonder if they had any better an understanding of the word, than I did as a kid.

Because I like to play with words, and find this stuff interesting, I looked up the dictionary definition.

Interestingly, it has its root in the word maim, and the first two definitions were ones I never knew.

The first one was a fighting term. To cause someone mayhem means to severely hurt them in a way that causes loss of a body part, and impairs their ability to fight. Wow.

The second meant to disfigure or mutilate a part of the body. With an emphasis was on the word "willful."

And the third, is the common use of the word. "Needless, willful violence and destruction."

Wow, do I really want to be putting this stuff on my lips? ;^0

So far, my lips have not fallen off, I think I'm safe.
