I had terrible trouble chosing an icon for this entry
So a comment about how I could get 'alien names' from anime got me thinking.
If Hikaru means "Light" then...
Star Trek/Death Note crossover! Fuck Yeah!
Hikaru Sulu is a brilliant but bored Starfleet Academy cadet. [According to memory alpha: 'Sulu was top of his class in astrosciences and advanced botany and founded Starfleet Academy's European Swordsmanship club...he tells Kirk that he has a doctorate in astrophysics ... and a master's in interstellar navigation.' AT AGE 21. Fuck me. I think we're overlooking another genius. He's just not as showey.]
One day he picks up a Death Note or 'Notebook of Death' which says: The Being whose name is written in this Notebook shall die. He doesn't believe it at first but he can't help trying it out. Soon criminals are dropping dead, left, right and center.
Dunno what his "Kira" equivalent name would be. Azrael? - angel of death. Ariel? - an authority over the Earth and its elements, Ariel has also been called an angel of healing, wrath & creation. Puriel? - "fiery and pitiless," and is one of the two angels (along with Dokiel) charged with the task of examining the soul of each person brought to heaven after death. One of the Angels of punishment. For now let's go with Azrael.
Would Chekov be L? The reclusive man-child genius brought in to stop "Azrael" or the Misa character (hopefully less dumb) the supporter blinded by his love for Sulu. I never saw Misa as stupid, to be honest. She does some stupid things sure, (Love makes you dumb?), but when it suits her she's actually incredibly resourceful and actually gets shit done. There was a scene early on in the manga where Light and Misa share a "moment" and he has to remind himself that he shouldn't get attached because he might have to kill her later.
If Chekov doesn't play Misa then I'm not sure who would. Spock could be an alternative to L with his logical side.
Pike as Soichiro Yagami? Which also makes him Sulu's dad... mentor would do just as well, I guess. Uhura as Spock's "Watari". Riley as Matsuda XD. Scotty and Keenser can be other task force members. (Aizawa and Mochi?)
For the shinigamis (Death Gods) - Jim as Ryuk and McCoy as Rem. Haha McCoy = Bones. Rem looks a lot like a skeleton. Perfect!.
Aaand Nero, Ayel and the rest of the Romulans can be the Yotsuba group.
Course I'm only thnking upto the first half (Episode 25 of the anime). Haven't thought about the second. :/ Although maybe the best route to go in this one is the live-action film way.
Or maybe Spock solves everything! XD.

And Dr Kirby could easily be a SA prof manipulated by Hikaru to get rid of the initial investigation that Spock leads.
Mikami - Charlie from Charlie X. He's certainly batshit enough.
Takada - Janice Rand (she and Sulu seemed pretty BFF in TOS and didn't Capatin Sulu ask Rand to be his comm officer?

But that assumes that a ST:XI/DN thing goes into the second arc which I don't really see working with Spock as L.
Meta/Rambling:
Spock vs Sulu/Chekov would be a completely different dynamic to L vs Light, so while the basic principle would be the same, unless you're writing a straight parody - and where's the fun in that? - you have a completely different set of circumstances.
For that matter, would Hikaru be as ruthless as light? Especially with the trick with the FBI - or as arrogant? Light slips up very early (The Lindt L Taylor debacle) which gives L his first crowning moment of awesome. While logical Spock might certainly make the same decision as L as to what constitutes an acceptable sacrifice would Hikaru be able to kill an innocent (or so he thinks, at the time)?
Again the shinigami relationships would be different as well. If you want to keep Kirk's character intact he would probably not be as willing to sit back and let Light!Hikaru slide down the slippery slope of moral turpitude.
Ryuk comments that Light is worse than any shinigami he's known several times. This seems to only delight Ryuk futher but Jim would probably find this disturbing.
Also I don't see Bones as being as passive as Rem was. For one thing he'd probably bitch at Chekov a lot more than Rem does with Misa and be more forceful. He can't stop Pavel from doing ridiculous things, but he can sure complain about them.

If I were to write this I doubt I would take it into the second arc (Near, Mello and the SPK) properly but would Jim the shinigami have the heart to write down Hikaru's/Azrael's name in his notebook?
