Questions:

1. Would it be appropriate for a small child to call her/his grandmother Obaa-chan or is it always 'san'. I ask because in Hindi, which is also has different levels of formality you often address your mother/grandmother less formally than your father/grandfather.

So in my personal head-canon for 'normal' fics (ie not Mafia!Trek) Sulu's dad is called Walter.

Walter is a second (or third) generation American so most of Sulu's Filipino family has settled in the States but they have some distant family back in Manilla.

Sulu's Mom, Akira(it's a unisex name; maiden name Aoki), was brought up in Japan but went to the US to study (at Starfleet!) where she met Walter.

Hikaru ia he eldest of three. His brother Hideki is two years younger and they have an intense sibling rivalry going on. Hikaru resents the fact that he was expected to do well and was held to a much higher standard while his younger brother could get away with murder and Hideki feels that he was always overshadowed by his over achieving elder brother and could never live up to him.

When they're older and they don't have to spend a lot of time together they get on much better.

Haruka, the youngest is two years younger than Hideki and four years younger than Hikaru. So yeah, Hikaru gets a lot of grief for going out with someone only three months older than his baby sister.

Except for Haruka, who made an effort to learn it, the Sulu kids sort-of understand Japanese but don't speak it well. Hikaru is the worst of the three and only knows enough to get by and has to think about what he has to say a lot. If forced to only speak Japanese for a while he gets better but that doesn't happen often.

Hideki is slightly better than Hikaru.

The Aokis!
Akira has one older brother who has two children Aoi and Kenji, who are much older than their younger cousins. (Akira was a late surprise baby). The Aokis work for a somewhat dodgy business family. Unmarried Great Uncle Kei'ichi is the head of the family and the Sulu's are terrified of him. Except for Akira but she was rather indugled as a child and his favourite.

Biker chick Aoi is eight years older than Hikaru and still thinks of him and treats him like a hyperactive four year old. Kenji is four years older than Hikaru and is something of a troublemaker. He thinks Hikaru's choice in romantic partners is hilarious (cute and crazy).

Kenji speaks Standard resonably well but he gets mixed up with his idioms and colloquial speach. He often translates things literally much to Hikaru's confusion. Aoi does not speak it well at all but she thinks she can. Her vocabulary is almost entirely from Hollywood films.

When Hikaru and Aoi have to talk to each other much is lost in translation. Then hilarity occurs.

Hikaru's sexual awakening began when, as a teenager during a visit to Japan, Kenji dragged him into Aoi's room to show him her secret collection of vintage mangas of an explicit nature.

Kenji also finds this hilarious.

2. I remember once reading somewhere that the Japanese word for 'prisoner' and the word for 'husband' sound alike. Is this true? And what are they?

3. Do you have some sort of language reference site I can use instead of bombarding people with questions?

4. There were more but I've forgotten.

I'm going back to sleep for a while. I'm exhauseted and I think either my flue's relapsed or I've caught another one. FML.
