“I still don’t understand.” Clark frowned, looking at Chloe’s newly issued passport. “Can’t you just be Chloe, again?”
“I erased all evidence of Chloe Sullivan from every database in the world. Which explains why the Legion of Superheroes from the future had never heard of yours truly.” She shrugged. “I need a new start, Clark. I’ve gathered more than my share of ghosts in the greater tri-state area as of late, after Jimmy and Davis, and marrying Ollie, and then getting it annulled… and I just need a chance for different things. Wide Open Spaces. A chance to make some big mistakes. New faces…”
“Save me the Dixie Chicks serenade.” He looked back down at the name on her fake ID. “I’m gonna miss you a lot, Vicki Vale.”
Chloe hugged Clark. “You can’t get rid of me that easily. You can travel around the globe in practically the blink of an eye. And you’ll always be number one on my speed dial.”
_____
“You’re telling me that you’ve never seen Doctor Who.” Chloe glared at Clark. “What have you been doing, living under a rock?”
Clark rolled his eyes. “Yeah. I haven’t watched the show about the alien who goes around saving the world because I’ve been a little too occupied, you know…saving the world.”
“Touché.” Chloe grinned. “But seriously, Clark. This show is like crack.”
“You said that about Merlin, but that show is totally unrealistic. Talk about a soap opera…”
“I swear, we are going to have to get your tastes to be more highbrow than American Pickers, and Pawn Stars.”
“I watch Auction Hunters, too.” Clark pouted.
“Sometimes, I wonder how Lois puts up with you.”
Clark cleared his throat, a little uncomfortably. “She doesn’t, anymore. We had a fight a couple of weeks ago, and she gave back the ring.”
“Clark….I’m sorry. I didn’t know. She didn’t say anything…”
“It’s okay, Chloe. You are always going to be my best friend, and Lois is always going to be your cousin. I should have said something earlier, but I didn’t want to put you in the middle. I won’t say that it’s easy, but I’m dealing. We’re still working together, and the League’s been really busy.” He smiled, trying to signal to Chloe that everything was okay. “Let’s watch an alien save the day, okay?”
“Fantastic.” Chloe said, popping in the DVD.
__________
Thursday nights became Must See-TV night for Chloe and Clark. They were working their way through the Doctor Who series. Chloe had started him with the Ninth Doctor, the first doctor in the most recent reboot- she explained that this was an easy entry point for “noobs” as she called him, into the Doctor who cannon- and that they’d work their way through “New Who” before returning to “Classic Who” and the other spin-off series.
“This. Is. Crap.” Clark said, taking out his regression on the remote and crushing it into itty bitty pieces.”
“Yeah, that remote had it coming!” Chloe quipped.
“Rose is separated from the Doctor for forever. She’s in a freaking parallel dimension! They love each other and they’re separated by stinking parallel universes!”
“Clark, I think we need to take a little bit of a break. You’re turning into a total fanboy and scaring me more than a little bit.”
“Well, excuse me for becoming caught up in quality television.”
“I am so glad that I didn’t introduce you to Twilight.” Chloe said with a grin.
_____________
“Next time, remind me to bring along a heavier jacket.” Chloe said, shivering as the cold winds blew by in the upper atmosphere.
Clark pulled her closer, sharing his warmth as they zipped through the sky. “Does that help?”
She smiled. “Yeah. And though I don’t mind helping on League business, why do you need second pair of eyes on patrol?”
“Haven’t we learned anything from the Doctor?” Clark said with a wink. “It always helps to have a friend by your side when you’re saving the world.”
__________
“Clark, I don’t give a crap that you have fantastic powers that almost make you omnipresent, that doesn’t give you the right to invade in my private affairs.” Chloe yelled. “You have no right!”
“You had no right, but that never stopped you back in high school.”
Chloe glared. “That was a low blow, Clark. But at least I can say that I grew up and learned from my mistakes. What about you?”
“I didn’t mean…” Clark frowned, “I was trying to do what seemed right.”
“You were wrong.” Chloe frowned. “Please Clark, just leave.”
“Chloe, I …” Clark stammered, “I….”
“Just leave.” She stormed off into her bedroom and slammed the door.
Clark flew off into the night.
__________
The next day, Chloe was gone. Her apartment was empty; Vicki Vale no longer worked at the Gotham Gazette. She was gone, without a trace.
He didn’t look for her. She didn’t want to be found.
And maybe, Clark figured, that all friendships have to come to an end, sometime.
_________
“Arwooooooo” Shelby whined.
“There’s a doggie door.” Clark groaned, “Let yourself out.”
“Arwooooooo” Shelby whined again.
“Shelby, shut up!” Clark yelled. “You have water, you have food, you have water. What in the hell do you want?”
Shelby jumped up on the couch, and deposited an action figure of the tenth doctor in Clark’s lap.
“I really don’t want to look at this now.” Clark threw the figure to the floor.
Shelby ran off and came back a moment later, this time with an action figure of Rose in her mouth. Chloe had given him a set of action figures for his birthday a month ago. Just looking at the figures made him miss Chloe more.
Shelby looked at Clark, giving him a look that said, “Go and find Chloe, you idiot”.
“You think I should go and find her?”
The dog tilted its’ head in response.
Clark was gone in a flash.

“So now you’ve named yourself after a flower now? Iris Allen.” he said, landing gently behind her on the balcony that overlooked Keystone City.
Chloe jumped, startled. “I’ve always liked Irises. It seemed like a good change.”
“Chloe, you can’t keep running.”
“I’m not running. It was time for a change, and I had the opportunity, and I took it.”
“All this conveniently happened just after we fought.” Clark replied. “Yeah, right.”
“You betrayed my trust, Clark. I needed space.”
“I’m sorry that I snooped. I had no right to go look at your private business, and I know it. I was worried about you, and I made a bad judgment call. I’m sorry.” He sighed. “But you can’t run away, Chloe. I need you in my life.”
“To help you remember to use a razor?” Chloe looked at Clark’s scruffy face. “Or use your heat vision? Clark, we’re grown up now, and we have to learn that we have to grow up and live on our own. We can’t trust each other.”
“We can’t trust each other? If there’s one thing that I’ve learned, Chlo, that there is nobody I can trust more than you. You are the one person that I’ve always been able to count on!”
“Clark…”
“Shelby helped me understand something.” Clark reached into his pocket and pulled out the Doctor and Rose action figures. “I made a mistake, but that’s not why you left. We’ve always been close, Chlo, but lately, we’ve been growing even closer. And without you in my life, I feel as lonely and hopeless as the Doctor did when he lost Rose in a different dimension. I need you Chloe. You are my best friend and I…” He inched closer to Chloe.
“Don’t say it.” Chloe said, tears threatening to fall from her eyes. “Don’t.”
“I love you, Chloe.” Clark dropped the action figures and grabbed her hands and held them in his own. “I love you, Chloe. And it’s scary and it’s wonderful, because we’ve both been hurt, and we’ve both had relationships that have blown up in our faces. But the time is right now, Chlo. We have each other, and this time, I know it will work, because it has to. We need each other. We’re just crazy and different enough that we’re the only two that will work with one another, because anything else other than you, Chloe, would always be second best for me.”
“If things didn’t work out with you, Clark….I…..I can’t lose you like I lost Jimmy, or Ollie…”
“I won’t promise that things will be easy, or things will be wonderful all the time.” Clark pledged earnestly. “But I promise you that it will be worth it.”
Chloe let go of Clark’s hands, and in one swift movement, linked her arms around Clark’s neck. She kissed him in response.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
____________
“Shhh.” Clark said, conspiring with the two ladies climbing the stairs behind him. “We have to be quiet.”
They nodded and raised their chubby fingers to cover their lips, matching Clark’s
“Shhh” guesture, and followed him, tip-toeing down the stairs.
Using his super speed, Clark managed to fix breakfast- pouring three bowls of Lucky Charms, and three cups of Orange Juice- in the blink of an eye. He returned to the living room and turned on the TV, and queued up the selection of the day on Netflix.
The opening credits had just began to roll when someone cleared their throat from the living room doorway. He quickly paused the show in response. Chloe stood there, an amused look on her face.
“Did you really think you could start the show without me?”
“We were trying to let you sleep.”
“The TARDIS noise will always wake me up.” She said with a smile. She walked over and sat down on Clark’s lap. She kissed him, quickly and fully on the lips.
Their twin daughters, Donna and Amelia giggled, their black pigtails bouncing up and down.
“Once more unto the breach?” Clark asked his girls.
“Arrrwwoooooo!” Shelby replied from the floor.
