Derek had explored a few areas, carefully as there were a lot of less than pleasant beings around and bad weather. When he didn't feel like risking outside, he explored inside the hotel and tried to get a better sense of who had also found themselves in this strange place.

The sounds of crack and something small falling to the ground caught Derek's attention. Someone was doing something at the hotel's gym. He doubted it was push ups.

Peering in, he saw a man slicing away at a wooden chair. It seemed more lay in wait for the same faith. Derek waited a moment longer before entering the gym and asking, "What did the chair do to deserve that?"

Thomas kicked the chair's wooden leg out of his path before turning at the sound of the voice to regard a vaguely familiar man at the door. He couldn't place him, not immediately, despite the very large, very distinctive red afro. "The chair was looking at me funny," he answered, running a hand through his hair and hefting the falcata again. "Maybe I'll even set its head on a pike as a warning to all the other chairs."

It was the hair, wasn't it? Initial changes in melodies were always because of the hair. At least, that had been what the Agent had grown to know.

Derek nodded his head toward the other chairs on the dolly. "Think this works too." If chairs could be threatened, attack one in front of them had to count. Then a thought occurred to him. "What would be a chair's head, anyways?"

It was the hair, but it wasn't shock for Thomas, just a niggling sense of faint recognition. It was probably nothing, and Thomas shrugged it off for the moment. He laughed, amused, at Big Red's willingness to play along, and nudged the broken chair with his foot. "Beats me," he answered. "I'd say it was the top of the back, but that's not particularly impressive mounted on a pike."

"Maybe if you draw a face on it." If the other Agents were here, they'd be shaking their head at him and trying to figure out if he was serious or seriously joking. "Couple of Xs and a frown. Might get the point across."

Derek took a few more steps into the gym having decided that the guy with the sword was friendly enough. The Agent wasn't a chair, after all. "I'm Derek."

That earned the redhead another laugh. Thomas was willing to believe he was joking, and would fully take advantage of all the straight lines ever if he wasn't.

He didn't offer a handshake, instead raising the bent-bladed sword in something like a salute as he nodded in acknowledgement. "Thomas. Got something against chairs yourself, Derek?"

Thomas received an acknowledging nod back. "Nice to meet you, Thomas."

Derek looked back at the half-destroyed chair, expression remaining the same neutral he came in with. "Not especially. Only if they're trying to be broken over my head or catching my hair." He had it happen once. It hurt. The hair catching. No one had tried to hit him with a chair, and hopefully that would never be the case. "Just wasn't something I expected to hear or see when walking by the gym."

The mention of breaking a chair made a satisfied smile tug at the corner of Thomas' lips. He still remembered how good it'd felt to finally break a chair over Madeline's head. He shook his head, banishing the stray thought at Derek's continued words and raised the falcata again.

"It was either the chairs or the gym equipment. Figured nobody was going to miss the chairs."

"Good call." Part of Derek wanted to know why Thomas felt the need to destroy something. The other part told him that he did, and leave it at that. He walked over and took a closer look at the damage done to the chair. "Wouldn't this hurt the blade though?"

Granted, Derek knew little of weapons.

He shrugged and ran a thumb along the falcata's edge. "Not really," he answered. "I just got it fixed up after it got set on fire by a dragon." He eyed Derek and chuckled. "Long story."

The pause from Thomas' words and Derek's reply was noticeably long.

"... There are dragons along with the vampires?" It wasn't so much as a request for the story, just a slight questioning as to what situation Derek had unknowingly found himself in.

"Two dragons." A pause. "That I know of."

Of course, what Thomas was (purposely) neglecting to mention was that one of those dragons was about the size of a large house cat. And that both of them were (nominally) on their side and not the vampires'.

Well, the other vampires'.

Sometimes there was simply no arguing with the idea that he might really have had inherited the same sense of humour as his little brother.

"Only two? Damn. Would think there were a whole bunch after seeing that many vampires." Derek shook his head. Something in the other man's melody stopped Derek from being completely alarmed. "Must not enough gold and jewels to nest in."

He crossed his arms and looked at Thomas. "Probably easier to think of it as everything's gonna show up in this Chicago than the other way around, huh?

"That's a small favour," Thomas agreed, though he thought to himself that Kitten hadn't seemed very inclined to gold and jewels, which was all for the best. Books were easier to get.

"Easier on one hand, but a damn nightmare on the other. If everything's going to show up, I'm going to have to get gear that'll kill everything."

In some way, knowing that not everything had showed up was a relief. Fire-breathing golems weren't a whole lot of fun. Still, Thomas had brought up a really good point, and as much as Derek would rather not, it was a fact that he might have to fight to protect another or himself.

"Hm. Any chance you know where to nab a nightstick? Think I need to have something on me besides a fedora, mike, and that communicator thing."

Derek got a raised eyebrow at the question, and Thomas opened his mouth to ask about the collection of items, then paused and looked thoughtful. "Maybe. Not sure, actually. That's a little--" Too nonlethal. "Benign for my tastes. But the ammo place might have something. Or worse comes to worst just lift one off the police. It's not like they'd know the difference."
