The oppressive feeling, the faint tingling sensation, fade away, and the spinning world suddenly resolves itself again. Wherever you were before, you’re no longer there. You find yourself standing in the shade of a building, and you can see a clear blue sky in front of you. If you look up, you might realize the building isn’t really a building. The ceiling above you is curved steel, polished to a mirror finish, and in the distorted reflection you can see that you’re not alone. A handful of other people are standing with you under this mirror dome, and they seem just as disoriented and confused as you are.
If you walk out of the shadow, you’ll see that you’re in a park, and what you’d taken for a mirrored dome is in fact an outdoor sculpture. An outdoor sculpture shaped like a
giant, mirrored lima bean. The air is comfortably cool, and with the sun out, it’s a beautiful day, but the park is empty save you and the people beneath the lima bean. Nearby is a
small, solid wood steamer trunk covered in peeling stickers, with a placard propped up on it that says simply “Welcome to Chicago.”
Inside will be handheld devices that look suspiciously similar to a certain fruit named telephone, with built in video camera. There’s one for each of you. When you first touch the phone, it activates and the screen displays
an instruction page.
Welcome to Chicago, indeed.
