"It's just Clare," what was with this kid? The teen girl adjusted her glasses and looked between the two. They certainly were not your average kids. The younger one was polite to a strange degree, didn't sound like he was from any of the American countries. The older one was sunny on a degree similar to Jenna, just without the sickening sweet aspects.
"Well, lead the way Negi," Clare offered, since he knew where they were going. She didn't have any better thoughts for dinner. Except not to give food to any Fae.
Negi couldn't help if he was polite to a fault, it was just in his nature. Still, people were far more casual here so Negi went with it, "All right." He turned around completely to go back the way he had just come, retracing his steps to the Burger King he had passed on the way here. It would be nice to be somewhere warm and out of this dreadfully cold wind.
Deciding to keep conversation going on the short trip there Negi decided to ask, "Where are you two from?"
Sora followed Negi to the burger place, putting his hands behind his head. The two kids seemed really nice, and Sora wanted to get to know them better.
"I'm from Destiny Islands," Sora replied, though he figured the othwr two wouldn't know where that was, this was another world after all. "What about you, Negi? Where are you from?"
"Ontario, Canada," Clare answered. Thankfully of the questions to ask that one was pretty easy. Clare's lived in Ontario her whole life, completely ordinary life there. "Circa 2008," about the only qualifier she thought might be important. Given who she has met here, and the answer being important.
"I've never heard of there, is it nice?" She wasn't sure if this was a linguistic barrier issue, or just another world grossly separated from standard Earth. It seemed a bit direct a place name... but it could be the name of a location on Earth. She didn't know every detail of geography.
Negi pushed the door open and entered the little fast food restaurant. It was strange how even places like this could be different from what he was used to in both Japan and England, but he didn't mind it so much. "Well, originally I'm from a small village in England but up until recently I was teaching at a school in Japan," he paused and then decided to add, "But I was visiting the Magical world when I was brought here." He decided to fore go explaining where the magical world was as it would really just make things messy. He was still a little nervous about being so open with his magic and background but he felt as though it wouldn't count against him here...given the circumstances. Besides, other wizards were open about it, why couldn't he?
He smiled, he hadn't heard of Destiny Islands either but they sounded like a nice place. Negi stepped up to the food counter and placed his order there.
"I've never been to any of those places before," Sora replied to both Clare and Negi, "But I'd like to see them."
He paused to place his order at the counter, then turned back to Clare.
"Destiny Islands is really nice and peaceful" there was a hint of melancholy to Sora's reply, he hadn't seen his home in close to two years, and he had thought that Door he and Riku would have sent him back there with Kairi, not send him here. But, hey, Sora was making new friends here, that was always nice.
There was an obvious break in her steps when Negi mentioned teaching in Japan. She was fairly certain ten year olds didn't teach... normally. It took the edge off when he mentioned being in a Magical World recently. Clare was pretty sure, now, that she was the exception to the rule here. Everyone but her was in some way extraordinary, she was certain now.
"Sounds pleasant," she said to Sora, although she did gather he was leaving something out. She figured it was simple homesickness, being here and not there. "I'm from a city pretty similar to this one," this was true in a general sense, of course Clare noticed every difference, but her family didn't move a lot, so she was very accustomed to home, "The climate is a bit cooler, architecture in Toronto is different too. No monsters or magical fog, that's a pretty definitive difference."
Negi laughed, "Well maybe if we figure out how to get out of here at all we can also figure out ways to visit other places as well." It was an interesting prospect and one that Negi was curious in. They had magical gates in his world and he imagined the same theory behind them could be used for something like that. It would take a lot of energy though he thought, remembering just how even time travel had required the special properties of the world tree.
"Maybe, I've visited a lotta diferent worlds," He replied, I don't see why I couldn't visit yours!" He didn't know where their worlds were in Gummi Space, but Sora would find it and any other worlds he'd probably wanna find after he found the way outta here, Sora would want to see his friends again.
"I got the Whopper, some fries, and a chocolate shake" Sora replied, any sandwich called a "whopper" had to be good!
"How do you all get used to all this?" Clare looked between the two, they seemed as ordinary as she did... in ways. The ways that counted, ignoring Negi's age and Sora's hair, they seemed like anyone at her school. Clare did realize she just jumped ten steps in the conversation, but they were talking about visiting worlds like... walking to the corner store! Something when she was Negi's age she couldn't do on her own.
Clare ordered herself up a chicken sandwich and an iced tea. She didn't share her order with the others due to losing the question in all the confusion. She was still getting used to time travel and magic, now world hopping too? And not just one of them, it was both of them. How do you just talk about this stuff like... what you saw on TV?
Negi looked surprised that Sora had visited a great number of worlds and, after chomping on a french fry, said, "I'd love to hear about them some time, Sora."
Before he could continue gushing much more, Clare interrupted with a comment that could have very well come from one of his students. Negi almost did think it had been Chisame and nearly choked on another fry. He managed to swallow it however and smiled weakly at Clare, "It's just...part of our lives I guess."
Sora nodded, at Ngi as he sipped on his shake, "Well, then I'll have to remember to tell you about them"
"You just do, I guess," Sora replied, after considering Clare's question. He stopped to take a bite of the burger, then added, "Though if it wasn't for Donald and Goofy, I probably wouldn't have" He owed Donald and Goofy everything for being there for him during that time.
"You okay," and concern for the kid completely eliminated her ability to stay confused. It'd come back once she was sure Negi wasn't choking on a fry. Although given that it was a fry, and not something harder, it should pass. Of course once he was okay she went back to the subject.
...Which didn't last because Sora spoke. All Clare could manage was very stunned silence. There was a very slim chance those were nicknames to some entirely ordinary friends, as given the run of luck and events here she was of the mind that, no, he was speaking of cartoon characters. Given that they had comic book characters here, it just had a bit more impact when you knew what was being talked about. "Donald and Goofy... How does that even work?" The question was not exactly directed at Sora, her confusion couldn't go unsaid in some manner.
Negi didn't pick up on the fact that the Donald and Goofy Sora was talking about were the fictional cartoon characters. It just didn't really occur to him, though perhaps a name like 'Goofy' should have tipped him off.
"If it happens all the time I'm not sure it constitutes as weird," Negi said, not quite sure what else to say since the focus seemed to have shifted to Sora.
"Uh, how does what work?" Sora asked in confusion, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, he wasn't aware of Donald and Goofy, or heck, any of his friends, status as being fictional characters in this world yet. So Clare's confusion left him baffled.
No, it still counts as weird. Clare is very certain that all of this counted as weird no matter how many times it happens to them. Overall, the world is not that weird. Clare was certain of that... usually.
With that thought in mind, "Those are just nicknames, right? Based on the Disney characters." It was a bit silly to jump to that conclusion, that he was friends with animated characters. Even if there was a woman going by Fleur Delacour out there. Couldn't possibly be that.
