Chauvelin had a horrible curious streak that really, really needed to be addressed at some point. Likely by a trained therapist. With a free schedule.

But, as it had not yet been taken care of, the little Frenchman found himself peeking into an open doorway, listening to the sounds of a party of some sort coming to being inside.

He looked down at the flyer he'd pulled from a nearby lamppost. It did, indeed, seem to be the place. But what sort of party had little paper skeletons hanging about? Not that he was complaining -- Chauvelin did have an interest in the macabre.

At the very least, he'd gather more information about the strange city. If he was lucky, they'd have some food to pilfer; with 18th century currency, it was considerably difficult to buy a proper meal.

Toph had been wandering around the city when she felt a large amount of people in a very small place. Not being one to miss out on excitement, Toph went towards the vibrations and entered the building, hearing strange music and a bunch of people talking and having a good time.

The earthbender entered the room, wondering why there was paper hanging around the room and why anyone would desecrate vegetables. The music was loud, and something entirely different to what she was used to. She walked up to a man who felt like he was wearing very fancy clothing. "So, fancy-pants, what's going on?"

"Mrph?"

Chauvelin had, at that very moment, been sampling some of the small cookies laid out on a platter. They seemed to be in the shape of bats and spiders. A strange choice, but it certainly fit the rest of the theme.

He turned, looking for the voice, only glancing down after a moment's confusion. Fancy pants?

"This is a party, young lady," he said, less irked by disrespect from a child than from an adult. "Beyond that," he shrugged, "I haven't the slightest clue."

Toph mimicked the man and grabbed a cookie for herself. To her surprise, it wasn't that bad.

"Well, it's a boring one. What's with the music? The party Aang threw for the students in the Fire Nation was a lot better." Sure, the party sucked in her opinion, but there was free food, so she'd be sticking around for a little longer.

When in doubt, sample the snacks.

Chauvelin screwed up his nose at the mention of the music, "Indeed. This is hardly my choice. I have never heard such..." He searched for a moment before deciding: "...racket."

"'Fire Nation'? Then you are not a native of this place?" Well, that wouldn't help him, at all! There was some exasperation in his voice, as well as a slight hint of anxiety -- he was tolerating this dreadful party to get information on Chicago, not to chat up a child who likely knew even less than he!

"Are there people from this place?" Red hadn't been, and she assumed this guy wasn't either. "I don't know why anyone would want to live in such a bad city. The only thing missing from this place is the Dai Li." The Dai Li were pretty good earthbenders, but Toph still hated them.

Toph grabbed a few more cookies and stuffed them in her pockets. "I'm not stickin' around here. This place sucks." She'd much rather be on Ember Island waiting for the comet to arrive and dealing with Aang going through his crisis about whether or not he'd be able to kill the Fire Lord.

She left the same way she had come. "I don't think you're going to get what you want if you stick around here, Fancy-pants."

"Cities certainly don't just," he made a gesture, "appear of their own volition. There must have been people to build it." Right?

He raised an eyebrow, and was about to question the girl young woman about the Dai Li, but she was already making her exit.

Chauvelin watched her go.

After a moment, he turned and made his way to a different exit. Maybe the girl was right. He'd have to find answers elsewhere.
