::INTRODUCTION::
"That's the thing with magic. You've got to know it's still here, all around us, or it just stays invisible for you."
Everything was normal. You were walking to school with a group of friends. You were questing to save the city from an evil sorcerer. You were having a nightmare about a giant squid named Franklin. In any case, there was nothing out of the ordinary about your day, whatever activities you have have been involved in. Nothing that would make you question that this day or night might end any differently than the day or night before.
But then you feel the strangest sensation, a pressure that isn't unlike what you would feel on a humid day. It is followed by the tingling feeling of sleeping limbs and a brief dizziness. Is it the onslaught of a migraine? You close your eyes to get your bearings...
...and when you open them, you find yourself underneath the arch of a giant metallic lima bean.
Welcome to Chicago.

::ABOUT CHICAGO::
Chicago was once the third largest city in the United States, an international hub of every sort. But something is very different about the stomping grounds Harry Dresden is used to. The population has been greatly reduced to several hundred people instead of nearly three million. The magical community that once shied away in the shadows has suddenly been roaming about, interacting with and seducing Chicago's citizens as if it has always been the norm.
The local government has vanished along with millions of others. The city is still powered by electricity and gas, and water is certainly abundant. Local stores never seem to run low on foodstuffs or clothing. With millions gone, the remaining residents find themselves in a steel-and-glass playground with magic swirling about them, just out of reach.
Chicago has also been cut off from the rest of the world - a mysterious fog surrounds downtown Chicago. As you move north from the
Gold Coast into
Old Town, south into
Chinatown, and west towards Ashland Avenue, the fog abruptly becomes heavier. The fog itself is incredibly dense, muffling sound and disorienting your senses - venture out into the unknown at your own risk.
Communication with the outside world is nonexistent - one of the busiest cities in the world has become a lonely isle of magic. The Amtrak trains stand silent on the rails, the El provides only transportation to within the boundaries created by the fog, and an online network seems only to work within the confines of the city.
The fog also seems to extend out into Lake Michigan, but exactly how far, no one is entirely certain...

::ABOUT TECHNOLOGY::
Your character's arrival in Chicago is undoubtedly magical in nature, and it certainly shows, especially in regarding any sort of electronical devices they may have brought with them. Cellphones, mp3 players, remotes, and anything else will have short-circuited immediately upon arrival. While it is possible to get these devices to start working again in the future, know this: it will never fuction as well as it did in their own world.
Chicago comes with its own standard of technology, though. Scattered throughout the city, your characters will find electronical devices and vehicles that were extremely popular...in their heyday. Gadgets that were popular throughout the late 19th century and all of the 20th century can be found at various stores throughout the city - in an odd twist, it is the oldest of devices that work better than anything from the latter half of the century. Modern radios, computers, and televisions - none of them are working properly and most of the time, a character will only be presented with static or the BSOD.
What works and what doesn't seems to be a luck of the draw, but one thing is constant: lack of communication with the outside world. If anyone has noticed that Chicago has disappeared off the face of the planet, it doesn't seem as they're doing anything to fix it. What's even more odd is that while a fog barrier surrounds Greater Chicago, the sky itself appears to be untouched. The sun still shines, the moon still rises, and the winds that are Chicago's namesake still blow fiercely.
Certainly, there is magic abound. But what strange magic this is.
