Jordan does not want to have naptime.
She isn't tired.
Benny isn't tired, either.
And Daddy is home!
This probably explains why, about a half hour after Mommy tucks her in, Jordan slips out of bed and creeps downstairs.
"Daddy?"
She's real quiet. But he has to be around here somewhere, right?

He should be working, especially if he's going to go hiking with Bletch this afternoon.
Instead, he's staring blankly at the computer screen, his thoughts elsewhere.

Jordan isn't far behind.
"Daddy? Daddy, I missed you!"
Reply
"There's my little girl." Frank turns around in his chair and opens his arms to her.
"I missed you too, honey."

"Can you read me a story?"

"I thought Mommy read you a story when she put you down for a nap?"

"You're not sleeping."
Dryly.

This is true.
"And if you read me another one I'll be sleepy?"

He doesn't like having Jordan around his work, but there aren't any files open or even lying on his desk, not right now.
"What story do you want to hear?"
Reply
Jordan wants a star on her belly.
Reply
He doesn't move yet, though.
"Before we read about the Sneetches, Jordan, I need to ask you a question. And it's an important one, honey, okay?"
Reply
She always tries to do what Mommy and Daddy say.
And she's good at answering questions.

Although the deep gravelly sound of his voice doesn't change, he's watching his daughter very steadily when he asks,
"Have you been back to Milliways again without me?"
Reply
Well.
"Yes."
Reply
"Look at me."
Reply
"I didn't mean to open the door, Daddy!"

And she does know. Honest.
"But there's ice cream, and Santi, and Annie, and Kaylee, and Coyote, and--"
She goes quiet for a second, eyes wide.
"And you're there sometimes, Daddy!"
