Every Avatar you meet is being run by a human being.

Unlike other video games, there are no NPCs in Second Life. You cannot hack and slash, shoot, burn, stab, insult, offend and berate someone in SL without attacking the avatar of a fellow player; a player who probably isn't in SL for you to offend. While there are combat sims where you can rollplay and shoot each other to your heart's content, in most public places it is very rude to interrupt people by shooting at them. And using racial slurs (which are strange when you have no idea what color someone actually is) or sexual comments with people you don't know is as rude in SL as it is in RL. These are people just like you operating the avatars you encounter. And the consequence of being a jerk is that people will ban you from entering their areas again and mute you so they don't have to listen to you. If you want to have fun, do stuff and go places, making everyone around you hate your innards is the wrong way to go about it.

It's a virtual world, yes, but the characters you see aren't video game characters run by the computer, anymore than your avatar is.
