One, Tamaki's maniacal obsession for commoners. It's hilarious to see Tamaki requesting for room service, but it's rather strange to have him appear upset- instead of mad-crazy ecstatic -that there is nothing but commoner stuff around. Your Tamaki does show some love for the commoner style, but it seems dulled down compared to the way he practically thrives on experiencing such things in the manga.
Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't have a Haruhi to get him even more worked up about it?
It's true that Tamaki's obsession exploded after meeting Haruhi, but the very core of it is already in him before he met her. The chapter where Tamaki first meets Kyouya, the very first thing he asks the bespectacled boy is, "Does your house have a kotatsu?" And the very reason he asked is because he wanted to enjoy the experience of keeping warm and having family bonding the way commoners do - all this explained in a long, eccentric Tamaki-style rant. When Kyouya said he only had western furniture in his house, Tamaki emo-ed. That time, Haruhi is clearly not around yet. ^^;;
I forgot the most important line -- in essence, he doesn't need Haruhi's presence to go berserk over commoners and their lifestyles, it's already an existing trait of his.
And the very reason he asked is because he wanted to enjoy the experience of keeping warm and having family bonding the way commoners do
...wait, Tamaki said so as because he thought it was a common tradition in Japan, more than because it was commoner one. Though, in a second angle for that argument: given his new obsession over Haruhi, he'd at least try to please her by gaining more commoner insight before he returns to her side wouldn't he?
Is that what a kotasu is? I had no idea (Viz just says it's a table with a heater underneath). I read into that as thinking Japanese culture was new and shiny, which fit into the "loves traditional Japanese costumes/plays/etc."
Looked into what a kotatsu is this winter, actually, since Mutsumi had wanted one. What I could find agreed that it's mostly just a table with a heater underneath, but I don't know much about any specific cultural treatment it might recieve. Russel and Winry made one for her, and after Mutsumi left camp Russ kind of took it back for himself.
Ahhhh, I understand the reactions now. I had mistakenly read Tamaki's reactions to the whole commoner thing as contempt, instead of the pure horror you had intended, so he sounded more spoilt than just naive and pampered. ^^;;
Thank you for considering my little ramblings, and good luck on exams as well. I'll watch the space eagerly for more happenings on Tamaki! ^^
