Judgement Time! Dekaranger!

Jan 15, 2013 09:21

I finished Dekaranger (SPD) last night! That is my fifth sentai! I am slowly making progress on my watch all the sentai (that has been subbed) goal! And I've started Magiranger, which is not quite what I was expecting, but is fun so far.

It's weird, Deka is another one where SPD is pretty similar. I mean, Deka is way more episodic than SPD, but like I said with Gao vs WF, I think they complement each other really well.

Weirdly, my shipping tendencies for the two are totally different. I mean, I don't like SPD nearly as much as most of my flist/circle does. Mostly because I really dislike Sky, don't care about Jack or the ball of light, and have serious issues with some of the show's structure. (Do not get me started on color promotion.) I mean, I ship Bridge/Z and Jack/Sky in that those pairings are obvious to me, but I don't actively seek out fic about them unless its written by a friend. I mostly watch for Bridge and Syd, because they are great.

Whereas with Deka... holy shit, OT6. I love all of them, and there is SO MUCH of them to love. I spent a lot of time flailing at
pockysquirrel while I was watching it, because I'm pretty sure some parts of the show (like Tetsu) came straight out of our collective id. And I love how much more focus Umeko got (I'm really bitter at how many of her episodes got cut for SPD, even though I understand from a FILMING standpoint why they did) but ugh, its great.

On the other hand, SPD did a much better job with the sense of having a THREAT that they were fighting against, whereas except for the finale (and they always do a great job with the finale) I never really took Deka's villains seriously. (Although if Deka wanted to have more with possession and fighting monsters while only wearing leather pants, I WOULD BE OKAY WITH THAT. I watch for the plot, totally.)

Anyway. My point is, Deka was great, SPD is pretty great, and I ship Deka's OT6, plus Ban/Hoji/Tetsu and Jasmine/Umko/Sen so much.

Okay, let's try and finish up

Day 11 - In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much.

Is anyone going to be surprised if I say Mirror of Regret/Always a Chance? I possibly overidentify a LOT with those episodes, but considering I have self-esteem issues and depression/anxiety, seeing a Ranger go through them and still get to be a hero? That is pretty much everything I needed when I was 12, and still need to hear occasionally. <3 (This is also why my ideal fic is Adam has issues and then there are hugs. And possibly the reason that I may have squeaked the first time I met JYB, because trying to articulate how much that meant to me was REALLY HARD.)

Day 12 - In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom.

At some point, someone remind me to finish the Gokaiger fandom overview, okay?

Day 14 - In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general/ Day 15 - In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom

You know, it's amazing how much fandom has made a difference in my life. Fandom has shaped so many of my experiences. I met my best friends because of fandom. I've flown across the country to meet people because of fandom. I've gone to weddings because of fandom, and because of people who have met each other through fandom. I live where I do because a friend I met through fandom suggested I move in with her when I quit teaching. Fandom has been with me during the worst times of my life, and during the best times. I have no idea what sort of person I would be or what my life would be like now if it wasn't for fandom. So... thank you. All of you. <3
