I enjoyed last night's Doctor Who so much that I'm about to liveblog a re-watch! Isn't this charming and just like the old days. (It'll probably start on a grumpy note but it gets squeeful after that I promise!)

Brilliant opening setting; the wrongness of lasers and bows-and-arrows and biplanes evoking The War Games and the WW1 centenary all at once.

[Why, WHY did they give that guy the line "just go, I'll be fine", and then have him nobly sacrifice himself for the little white boy? So soon after Danny Pink?]

The hand-mines seemed cartoonish in my memory, but are CREEPY AS HELL on this rewatch. Very nice.

"Your chances are one-in-a-thousand; focus on the one"

"Tell me the name of the little boy who isn't going to die today"

How do we know that Davros isn't a really common name on Skaro? On a dozen planets? This moral dilemma feels a little pasted on...

Oh, my, Colony Sarf moves magnificently. I wonder if the original design was for a more CGI'd face, though; that makeup job is a little too humanoid for my tastes.

(Suicide moons!)

"Dark Lord of Skaro"? I'm really, REALLY not sure about the rebrand for the Harry Potter generation.

"Just between you and me, a fantastic kisser." I'm not 100% sure about the ethics of teaching students things their examiners won't know; but I am so, SO charmed by the fact that this is a completely ok thing for her to talk about in front of her students.

"Don't send a helicopter - think it through!"

ROS HENDERSON WORKS FOR UNIT EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL AND NOTHING HURTS "pardon my sci-fi, but this is beyond any human technology" YES GOOD HEADCANON ACCEPTED THIS IS A NATURAL PROGRESSION OF HER CHARACTERISATION IN BUGS

And we're not even going to explain how Missy's back because it's not ABOUT that, of COURSE she's back.

Sending his confession dial to Missy; "you're the puppy"; trolling us with "when he was a little girl" (yay/sigh?); "it's sort of our texting"; "reproductive frenzy" -- this is really all about how Doctor/Master is TOTALLY canon except for how Moffat is squicked by the icky sex stuff. "Infinitely more complex".

"No, I've not turned GOOD."

Clara is very good though.

"Three versions of Atlantis"

Ros Henderson can instantly generate an algorithm to find the Doctor anywhere in time.

"Cheap and nasty time travel"

ANACHRONISMS.

Somebody's seen Fury Road.

"This stuff'll be hilarious in a very few hundred years"

SUCH a good performance from Capaldi here. "It's my party, and all of me is invited" indeed.

"You're ashamed"

"I know traps, traps are my flirting, this is a trap"

---

"what's wrong with the gravity? ... a little bit sexy"

"this airlock is a bit pants"

And then it gets all.. heavy-handed in evoking Genesis. Interesting; I didn't read this as heavy-handed last night. I was utterly captivated and excited and 'unlimited rice pudding'! But on a rewatch, it's just not as compelling as the Missy/Clara segments.

"What if you kissed an ugly?"

Missy's horror, "this is the planet of the daleks", such a neat way of making this SO SCARY; so I'm sure she's never actually trying to ally with the daleks here, just to get inside the TARDIS and rescue the Doctor. Because things would be so boring if the time war was back on!

(But the daleks don't quite make sense; so many different eras all mis-matched together. This is some kind of Davros-fantasy simulation, I suppose... Capaldi's face on the destruction of the TARDIS, so much going on, was at least part of it "no, I'd have felt it if that were real"?)

YES GOOD HI DOCTOR WHO THAT WAS CERTAINLY SOME AWESOME WOMEN BEING AWESOME

(IF YOU KILL ROS HENDERSON I WILL FOLLOW YOU AROUND AND BLOW RASPBERRIES ANY TIME YOU TRY TO SPEAK.)
