personality in 10 points.
- Intelligent; Martel is clever and he knows he's clever. He also knows it could stagnate if he let it, so it's something he actively tries to work on, constantly.
- Ambitious and driven; he wants things, and once he's decided on what he wants he's extremely dogged in going after it. He has a ridiculous amount of drive.
- Intense; there is so much of him under the surface, which from the inside can often be very overwhelming. He's an extremely, intensely emotional person and it's something that he feels needs to have a tight lid kept on it for...assorted reasons, which tends to result in him being kind of worryingly quiet and there, as opposed to histrionic.
- Moody; related to the above, he has a vicious, nasty temper that he tries to keep as reined in as possible.
- Two-way possessive; he tends to see people belonging to him as much as objects do. The difference is that with another person it's mutual--a Martel is for life, not just Hogswatchnight :(
- Private; while he's perfectly capable of having an articulate conversation about how he feels and what's going on for him, he doesn't fucking want to, he internalizes a great deal and often his exhibited reactions seem (or ARE) totally bizarre without the context he's refusing to share. Also, generally, he just prefers to keep himself to himself.
- Caring; in the weirdest way! Martel fusses over people and in the same breath behaves as though this is some kind of chore that he's so grandly taking on. He worries and he's overprotective, but he tends not to like admitting it. So it can be...odd.
- Family-oriented; it's been arguable whether Martel's personal goals or his family come first in his priorities, but after the last conflict of that nature -- which mostly involved him being a total fucking moron -- it's more solidly reliable that he will put family first. They've always been that which around the rest of his life revolves.
- Bratty; while Martel prefers to be at least slightly discreet about this, his sense of humor often involves being dryly mocking of whoever he's talking to. He's one of those precociously intelligent teenage boys who thinks he is so funny, in the '--hey!' kind of a way.
- Arrogant; Martel's awareness of himself and his advantages often extends itself to a kind of unconscious arrogance about what he can accomplish, how he's seen, etc, etc. (It's not always unconscious.)
family.
VINCENT MARTEL [56]; Father. Vincent is the current CEO of Martel Security, and undisputed patriarch of the Martel family in its present incarnation. He met his wife on a trip to Argentina and eventually persuaded her to relocate to Denver and marry him. He's a well-spoken, well-mannered man, a driven perfectionist, a happily overworked businessman, and devoted father and husband. He fenced competitively when he had more time for it, a sporting interest and hobby that he's passed down to both of his sons -- along with his tendency towards logic that makes Serafina want to hit all of them. Like his sons and like his own father before him, he's devoutly Catholic. He also has a tendency towards slightly unconventional methods in dealing with problems, and when he believes he's right, anything standing in his way is simply something to be worked around.
That's also something his sons picked up.
SERAFINA MARTEL (ROSSI) [57]; Mother. Serafina is the older of two sisters -- by twenty-two years, as Felice was an unplanned surprise. She grew up in Cordoba, Argentina (capital city of the province of the same name) and has been described by her sons as 'the only pagan in Argentina, who of course our father then married'. The tiniest person in the family, height-wise, she seems to be about fifty feet tall if you spend enough time with her. She reigns over the household, although there is a certain traditional vibe to how she and her husband handle their affairs. Easily the most beloved person in the family, she tends to inspire fierce loyalty. She has a variety of her own eccentricities; an occasional tendency to get, as her family describes, 'unnecessarily cryptic, what is this mystic nonsense Madre', for example.
MARCUS MARTEL [19]; Brother. The elder and often more sensible of the brothers, Marcus looks out for his little brother whether he likes it or not. While he can easily keep up with Aloysius, he doesn't have so much of the same ambition; he knows what he wants and he'll get it, but he's not 'driven to greatness' the same way...it just kind of happens. Like most of the Martel side of the family, he's Catholic, but he is more open to the religion the Rossis lean towards than his brother.
DONALD MARTEL [86]; Paternal grandfather. Donald was a young, devoutly faithful clergyman when he met the woman he would eventually give up the priesthood for. His faith remained the same, even after he renounced his vows and he raised his son with it. After rejoining more secular life, he involved himself with the business his elder brother was building up -- Martel Security, in its infancy. When the elder Martel died, rather than take on the responsibility himself he passed it over to his son Vincent, who had always been more interested in it than he himself was. Both his brother and his wife died before the youngest Martel was born. He lives in Colorado, with an on-site nurse at his son and daughter-in-law's insistence.
FELICE ROSSI [34]; Maternal aunt. Felice was the surprise of the family -- which is saying something considering the rest of them -- and at only thirty-four to her sister's fifty-seven, it's probably obvious why. She still lives in Argentina, where she presides over that side of the family's ancestral home and most of their extended family (younger than her or otherwise). She's intelligent, quick-witted, and cheerfully interfering, usually for the best.
ELENA DREYFUSS [18]; 'Sister'. Elena has lived with the Martels since she was fifteen and her father signed guardianship of her over to Vincent and Serafina. Officially, Alan Dreyfuss was making a career-necessary move out of Colorado and his daughter wished to continue with her schooling and pursuits in Denver rather than leave with her father and aunt. She has minimal contact with them, and has adjusted over the past three years to living with the often eccentric Martel family. It's most people's (correct) assumption that she will, eventually, marry Marcus.
