Late to the show

I would say about a year ago I read all of the Game of Thrones books except for the two short stories. Then when I heard that there was going to be a show and saw the trailer I have to admit I did squeee!

Later when I saw the the site dedicated to the hero versions of the weapons for the show I was even happier. They were selling Ice, Needle, Longclaw and Barathions Hammer ^o^

One would expect that I would have watched the first episode on premier night. Logically I would have gone to my parents or someone who has HBO and I would watch it. Hell, there are torrents :P

Well, two things, one is life getting in the way and keeping me from entertainment. Second is I had a fear that it was not going to live up to my expectations. The books are very heavy on characters and there is a lot of sexuality, violence, and the one thing that I was wondering how they were going to handle. The number of characters.
There are dozens of characters in Wnterfell Alone. Forget, Kings Landing, the Wall, the Fingers, The Eyrie, and forget about the land beyond the Narrow Sea.

They did the best thing they could have for a TV series. The show the characters but do not bring up their names unless necessary. Only the fans of the books know who they are and what they mean to the bigger story.

The one thing that I find funny is the thing that geeks have a snarky comment on is all the sex. I think that a lot of current scifi and fantasy is very sexless. Geek reviews that I have heard always talk about the sex an implied negative. Most of these characters are horny dolphins in heat. But you have to remember, they are nobles and royals, they are meant to be prim and proper in the public eye. Could you imagine the sexual frustration playing the game all day and night? The power too. You have to take that in consideration too, these are the most powerful people in the world, who is going to tell them that they can't bump uglies!

I have ranted one long enough. I finally watched the first episode and they did everything that needed to be done with the main characters. And the Dire Wolf Cubs are so very CUTE!

Anyone else out there read the books?
