I was listening to the Amateur Scientist Podcast. Its a very sarcastic, comical skeptic podcast. Funny most of the time and I was listening to the Halloween Spooktacular from last year. It is just so over the top that I love listening to it again and again. If you are interested be warned that there is some strong language and some very off color humor in it.
Anyway, there is this bit where the host is looking to talk to the dead and he goes to Yahoo Answers for some help in contacting the dead.
I have to say that I am skeptical of the supernatural. I ended up skeptical with the supernatural after reading too much and finding too many discrepancies in the stories. So when the host reads the comments to the question of contacting the dead, I find it funny. A lot of the answers seem to come from young people that have been playing a lot of table top RPGs and have seen way too many movies. They are talking about the dangers of opening the gates of the dead and then TELL YOU if you are going to do it use the ouija board and good luck ^_^.
Others would say that they the spirits your looking for are environmental and they are used to working with natural spirits. One even said that you need to contact a REAL spiritualist. And that a lot of of people say they are and you need to find the real ones, good luck. Like I said its a lot of people that have a lot of pop culture short hand mish mash of legends and lost ritual practices. When you hear it read out it is kind of silly.
You know, I can talk all of that and some day I will go on a ghost walk or "hunt" and see for myself. What better evidence than personal experience. If something happens then you can start breaking it down and self everything is repeatable and testable.
But what I can't understand is why always and only at night? Okay, historically we humans take shelter from the night. We could not defend ourselves easily or even see so there has always been a hardwired fear of the dark. That plays into it. What I don't get is why ghost hunting is only done at night, even though most of the stories I have heard of occurred during the day.
If we follow the line of thought that ghostly activity can be a repeat of a single event over and over. Why does it repeat where we can see it only at night, and the event happened lets say at noon. Would it be better to investigate at the time that it happened rather than at the time when our imagination is heighten and can skew our judgement? If there is a spirit world out there and we are able to detect it we need to do it with true scientific methods instead of the ghost hunter arm chair science which is nothing more then bad science.
In the meantime I prefer JUST a good ghost story. Remember the Disney version of the Headless Horseman? There was a halloween special when I was about 15 that mashed together a bunch of Disney halloween stuff with a spooky narrator. That was themed out to be a good kind of scary and fun. I have to see if I can find that again.
