I need thicker skin. Maybe I should laminate myself.

Sometimes it's hard to develop that thick skin. I truly never developed a thick skin until I started working in the insurance industry and had people yell at me and use very inappropriate language. When someone goes out of their way to say something mean that will purposefully hurt you then that is an indication that they have some self-esteem issue that they feel the need to make others feel bad.

If you're worried about criticisms from your boss in regards to your job. a) They are saying it to help you improve b) You don't actually have to listen to every single piece of advice c) sometimes the power structure may lead them to be too frank or too honest or to nitpick things.

For example for option b) at every employee review my boss gives me an "average" rating for my customer service skills. But I am okay with this average rating because I'm not going to go out of my way for a customer that is screaming at me that I'm a liar.

And I used to have a student that I tutored one-on-one who I could not get motivated to study English at all. Almost every time I tutored he would always tell me "I hate English." And for a while this made me very sad and frustrated, but eventually I realized he did not hate ME, he did not hate me as a teacher, he just hated studying English in America because he never wanted to be in the U.S. in the first place.

So don't let things get you down too much. Don't spend all your time worrying. It's good to want to really excel in what you to, but it's bad if it begins to effect your self-esteem and your happiness. Evaluate what you are worried about specifically and see what can be changed and what cannot be changed.

The thing is though, people will walk all over you if you given them an inch. The trick is not to given them an inch. But I only discovered this after I had let a great deal of people walk all over me. Sometimes this process takes a while and sometimes I still find myself hurt and offended by things that most people maybe wouldn't feel hurt and offended about.

This was an epic comment, but I hope it helped (=

Thanks for the comment. It has helped. :) Excellent advice.

Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere.
