When Sohee closed her eyes, she saw stars. They weren't great or spectacular. They were just soft, white circular lights that shone in the dark. But they flickered about sporadically like they were being chased by invisible creatures, only able to rest when they looked back.
She didn't see them all the time, but when she did, she wondered if she was going insane.
Thoughts like these, she couldn't share with anyone. ...But with just one other person.
Sunmi was always quiet when Sohee told her about the slow process of going crazy. During the especially hard parts, Sunmi would hold Sohee's hand, squeezing it like she knew the pressure points to make Sohee relax. But it was like magic. When Sohee was done telling Sunmi, Sohee did feel better. It was Sohee's magical cure-all.
Except there was one thing.
The biggest secret Sohee could never tell was something she would never tell Sunmi either. Sohee knew it was like sharing a bicycle but holding out on the wheels. Still, she would never give it up.
The thought would come and go. It was ironic because it was the happiest of all the secret thoughts that Sohee had.
"I love you" she would scream in her head. "I love you!"
One particular day, Sohee was looking to fix her fake lashes. They were bothering her eyelid; one part of it was poking into the sensitive flesh near her eyeball. Sohee, blinking rapidly, tried to get to a well lighted mirror but they were all taken. She couldn't even shove her face into a corner.
In the end, it was Sunmi who fixed it, making Sohee's heart beat on rapid-fire as Sunmi drew close. With lips inches away from Sohee's inexpressive eyes, Sunmi smiled. It suddenly reminded Sohee of the stars she sometimes saw with her eyes closed. Soft, white, and able to shine in the dark.
This time, when she closed her eyes to rest, Sohee saw dark figures moving at an alien speed. They maneuvered this way and that and, lastly, there was one small, sad smile.
"I love you" Sohee screamed in her head again. "I love you..."
But then, what was the point of screaming? Sunmi would never hear and, though Sunmi would have probably held Sohee's hand through the confession, Sohee knew the answer in her throbbing chest.
It's you.
