Roy never thought his life would turn out this way. When he was a child, he knew that he wanted to do something to help his country. But he just wasn't sure what.
All that changed the first time his foster mother took him to see a military parade.
When the young Mustang saw those crisp blue uniforms, the way that they all moved as one sharp, unified motion, the pride that shined in their focused eyes, he knew what he wanted to do.
“Madame, I want to become a solider.”
“You want to be a dog of the military and have the country yanking on your leash?”
“Yeah!” The excitement in his voice was palpable.
“No way a son of mine is going to become a military lap dog.”
“But..”
“That's final.” The tone of her voice left no doubt.
“Yes, Ma'am.”
The day that Roy admitted to her that he had joined the military had left his stomach feeling about three feet underneath him. He was sure he was going to get a beating- or, at least a long talking to.
What he got was worse.
She hardly spoke, just shook her head sadly and told him that she was disappointed in him.
He almost quit the same day.
But he had promised Hawkeye's daughter that he would make this world a better place.
And through all of the struggle, he knew that Roy Mustang- military dog- would keep his promise.
