FMA_Fic_Contest- Prompt 43: Circles: "Ring" (Maes x Gracia)

Feb 19, 2010 15:28

This was done for the LJ group FMA_Fic_Contest. As usual, I didn't win, but it is still fun to write.

Title: Ring
Author: Seaweed
Series: Pre-Anime series
Word Count: 500 exactly!
Rating: G
Characters: Maes x Gracia
Summary: Sometimes the best memories are accidentally made.
Warnings: A bit of fluff and a bit of sadness at the end, yes, there is a spoiler.

The night didn't go quite as well as Maes had hoped it would. He had only been back from Ishbal a couple of months, and earlier that day, he had received the paycheck that finally gave him enough money to buy the ring that he wanted to give Gracia.

He took Roy by the jewelery when he had first spotted the ring, and his best friend gave it his blessing. After all, the Best Man had to make sure the future groom didn't mess this up.

Maes had even had Roy take Gracia out shopping a few weeks before. He planned a route that went past the jewelery store, and just as Maes had predicted, she drug Roy inside to look. She even pointed out the ring as one of her favorites.

That had sealed the deal.

The same night he got the ring, the crafty Maes had his co-conspirator make some hasty excuse about needing Gracia's help at the flower shop, something about needing a last minute bouquet of flowers for a date that night. Roy did have a date that night, but the flowers were just a convenient excuse to get Gracia out of Maes' apartment for a while, so he could cook the couple of dishes he knew how to make and tried to make his place as romantic as he could.

Unfortunately, by the time Gracia walked in the door, the candles were dripping wax down onto his kitchen table, and he was desperately trying to stop the oven from smoking up the entire apartment by opening all of the windows in the place, letting in the cold air from the crisp evening outside.

A short time later, she had helped him clean up the kitchen, food had been ordered from a local place that delivered Xingian food, and most of the wax was cleaned off the table, though there were a couple of small blobs of red wax that would remind Maes for years to come about the night he tried- and failed- have a romantic evening.

After they had finished the noodles, Gracia leaned in close to Maes- so close he could feel her lips brush against his, and licked a little bit of sauce off his cheek. They both had a good chuckle, then Maes' face suddenly went serious.

“Maes, honey. What's wrong?”

He slid off his chair, down to a kneeling position in front of her, and fished the ring box out of his pocket. “I'm sorry, this was not quite as romantic of a night as I had hoped. But Gracia Williams, will you marry me?”

Tears rimmed Gracia's eyes as she went down to the floor next to him and wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight. “Of course I will, you big goof. Of course.”

Years later, standing at his grave, their daughter standing next to her, she twirled her wedding ring on her finger. Her eyes misted up as she remembered that perfect day.
