Military Man: A Maes Hughes FST
I did a FST (fan soundtrack) for the fst group. You take a character or a pairing, or a whole series or a book or tv show or whatever and take songs that fit it, to make a soundtrack of sorts.
The theme this month is "characters who died in canon". So I can't say in the FST group who it is until the lj-cut, but I can post it here. :)
This is my first ever FST. I had wanted to do one for a while, but this was the first time that I really liked hte theme for the month.. so here it is. I hope you all like.
CHARACTERS WHO HAVE DIED IN CANON: FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: A MILITARY MAN FST (FMA SPOILERS!)
This FST contains spoilers for episode 25 of the anime and chapter 15 of the manga for Fullmetal Alchemist.
This is my first FST ever, so please go gentle on me. I think I spend as much, or even more time, tying to make the front and back covers as actually getting the tracks together.
Maes Hughes was the first character in FMA that I really fell in love with. He was a family man, a best friend, a goofball, a serious worker, A father, a husband, a friend, and too smart for his own good.
When he died, it was so sad, but it was understandable, since his death really moved the plot forward. It was unfortunate, but necessary.

Maes knew that being in the military was very tough at times, and sometimes people had to do things that they didn't want to. It was easy to feel helpless, but it's good to have a best friend who understands.

Through these fields of destruction

Ive watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm

My brothers in arms
When Maes and Roy came back from Ishbal, they were both changed men, with the atrocities that they saw- and caused. But Maes still stood by his best friend, through the roughest of times.

Even though Maes knew that something big was brewing in the military, and his snooping around may cost him dearly, he couldn't stand around and wait for the people around him to get hurt, or killed. He didn't want to drag anyone else down with him in case the worst turned out to be true. It did.

As the bullet struck Maes and he started to fall towards oblivion, his last thoughts were of his wife, and how he hadn't wanted to to leave her yet.

And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
Roy remembered the times that Maes stayed up with him, sometimes all night, just talking with him and letting him drink and cry and scream when he needed to. And now Maes was gone, and he was drinking alone.

A couple of nights after Maes' funeral, Roy had one last drink at the barstool where they had sat and talked so many times before. And as the bartender yelled for the last call, he wondered how this new chapter of his life would unfold.
