Engineers in our test team work on the widest range of technologies in Redfin's business and have strategic impact, using advanced techniques for assessing scalability, performance and quality. Projects include data acquisition, search, data mining, AJAX user interface and test frameworks.
As the final arbiter of what services we release to our customers, test engineers are involved with every phase of product development, from design to support, with significant exposure to the business requirements behind every new release of our website. The best test engineers are also contrarians, people who think for themselves, trust only what they can measure and always see how things could break or improve. They are wicked-fast learners, who love new challenges, and aren't put off by complexity. And, of course, they are able to put themselves in the customer's shoes.
What makes Redfin a special place to work in testing is our unique commitment to the role: many of our best engineers are focused on quality, building tools and automation for exhaustively characterizing the entire code-base; the quality team influences the design of every feature we bring to market, sets the standard for engineering best practices, and informs major product decisions.
Responsibilities:
* Review product designs to ensure a high-quality customer experience
* Develop automated acceptance and functional tests
* Analyze data to understand usage patterns and performance bottlenecks
* Own feature areas in any or all three tiers: web interface, server, database

* Ability to design, understand, break, develop, and fix code (specific knowledge of Java and SQL a plus!)
* Strong analytical capabilities
* Passionate commitment to engineering quality and productivity
* A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field

Technical Product/Program Manager, Commerce; Seattle
Redfin is seeking a talented technical product and program manger to take on the industry's most audacious, complex e-commerce transaction: guiding a customer through the terms of a real estate offer and all of its contingencies until funds are delivered to an escrow agent and ultimately back to the consumer.
This entails working on a small team creating a customer self-service application that supports collaboration between a Redfin agent and the customer, as well as other parties to the transaction. Because the technology involves a self-service site that helps us deliver 100% customer satisfaction at better margins, it is fundamental to how we make real estate better for consumers.
Responsibilities include:
* Researching business requirements: talking to customers, studying competitors, similar businesses, analyzing usage patterns to understand how to design and deliver an e-commerce experience that is unchallenged in the market
* Designing products: writing specifications, creating wireframes, and collaborating with design mockups to outline in precise detail the features of each release of Redfin's site
* Monitoring schedule, acceptance criteria: partnering with engineering to ensure Redfin products are developed to specification, making trade-offs as needed in favor of quality, schedule and consumer requirements
* Developing site content: writing and editing text that appears on the site, including both the body of the online experience and help
The ideal candidate is:
* Customer advocate: a zeal for building an addictive, delightful user experience; the instinct to identify with the consumer; the determination to gather data directly from customers
* Market-savvy: currency with what's happening on the frontiers of the Internet that's really powerful and cool
* Proven: Has a history of driving ambitious projects to completion, preferably at a startup: we'll look for key contributions to teams working on strategic projects and for thought leadership in getting to what customers need
* Lots of ideas: we'll ask you how you would improve Redfin's experience for buying and selling homes
* Entrepreneurial: values speed, flexibility, creativity and common-sense, able to initiate and willing to work hard. Monstrously intelligent and driven by exceeding customer expectations
* Experienced: 3-7 years experience bringing one or more successful online applications to market. Experience shipping a consumer-focused ecommerce online service
* A good writer: the ability to write and speak clearly and concisely
* Process-oriented: familiarity with every phase of product and project management and the attention to detail to make sure development proceeds without a hitch
* Detail oriented: the ability to have laser focus to make sure everything is executed well in a fast moving environment; able to turn complex and ambiguous problems into successful experiences
* Technical chops: the technical skill to work closely with talented engineers building products that are straightforward to use, code, and test yet rapid to develop and innovate

Designer; Seattle
Redfin is seeking a master craftsperson to design one of the last gigantic online marketplaces. Our challenges are fascinating:
* How we can create a rich, addictive experience of neighborhoods and homes so that the process of buying a home can move online
* How we guide people through the home-buying and selling process, so that the complicated becomes simple, and the terrifying leap becomes a thrill
* How, using a map as a canvas, we can build an interactive application that people can use over the course of a multi-month home search
* How we can create a community of real estate mavens who work together to help one another out as they move from evaluating homes to looking for lenders, inspectors and movers
Redfin is a start-up that will give you the latitude to do your best work; we prize our creative culture and consumer focus. We are growing by leaps and bounds.
As our designer, you would be responsible for the usability of our site, and also for the visual appeal of our brand, expressed both online as well as through thousands of yard signs and listing fliers in neighborhoods across America. The brand is important because Redfin stands for a new, consumer-friendly force in a stodgy, anti-competitive industry.
We thus need someone skilled in information architecture and visual design, with an instinct for simplicity and a facility with the most innovative online techniques. Depending on your experience and aptitude, you would over time build and manage a small team of HTML coders and graphic designers.
Responsibilities:
* Develop wire-frames outlining major new user experiences
* Develop prototypes for usability studies
* Create web pages that Redfin engineers can use as the starting point for application development
* Working with graphic designers at Redfin or through partners, manage visual elements of Redfin's brand
* Lead focus groups, analyze site traffic, run A/B tests to refine designs in a data-driven way
If you are interested in only producing wireframes, not in participating in the process of building the website, this job isn't for you.
Qualifications:
Because we believe that design is part instinct, part science, we measure a designer primarily by the quality of his or her portfolio. Other qualifications we seek:
* Website design experience; familiarity with the most innovative sites across the Internet
* Degree in visual design, human factor and interaction design preferred
* The ability to manage projects and people, with good communication and leadership skills
* Expertise with standard design tools including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator (or equivalents); experience with Adobe Flash and JavaScript
To apply, send a resume to careers (at) Redfin (dot) com. Use the word "Designer" in the title.
