Last weekend I took off of work on Friday, boarded a jet plane at 9am and flew down to Houston Texas to spend time with more family then I’ve seen in… 20 years? The occasion was my cousin Alida’s wedding. While I’d never met Alida, my Aunt and Uncle were nice enough to invite me and host me as part of the larger Schumacher contingent. It marked my first chance to spend time with my step-sister and her husband, and meet my nephew. (Cutest kid in the world) I also got to spend time with Dad and Carolyn. We had dinner together , wandered Woodlands mall a bit and spent some time chatting at the hotel after dinner. Where the trip in March was nerve-wracking because it had been years since I’d seen dad, this trip was far more relaxed. In part it was because we were all on vacation, and in part it was because we’re making progress. I like this progress.
I also met up with my brother after 15 years. Then there were the cousins, ones I’ve not seen in 20 years, and their kids. It was quite the family reunion. My grandparents weren’t able to make it out, but I’m planning a trip down out in November to see them. (Prior to March, I actually hadn’t flown since 9/11, by the end of this year I’ll have 4 trips under my belt. )
While Houston itself doesn’t appeal to me, I was glad for the summer break with family, and wish I’d been able to follow everyone down to the Beach house in Galveston. I’ve made a personal commitment to stay more connected . I look forward to getting to know my step-sisters and brother-in-law (And also spoiling my nephew as much as allowed.)
This post is lacking in pictures, simply because the camera stayed home this trip.
