We are simpletons

For our entire school-lives both Jackie and I had our first day of school the first Tuesday in September following Labour Day. This was without fail, etched in stone, never to be torn asunder. The Lake Washington school district appears to use the Mayan calendar.  The short version of where I am getting at is that Henry will be in Alaska with us while his school mates endure the first week of school. Personally I didn't think of this as too big a deal as not much really happens.  If you ask Henry's buddies they'll say they go to a lot of lectures in the gym that they don't listen to the first week and that nothing happens.  When we asked the teacher's how big a mistake we'd made and what he would miss they stressed that we should cancel our holiday as the first week is among the most important and that Henry would never catch up.
We looked at rescheduling the trip but it would cost us $1200.  We've decided our son is a genius and will succeed despite missing several key assemblies. His friends think he's the luckiest boy in the world.  I think he is too, but for entirely different reasons.
