Hey,
Nicole and I had the most amazing day yesterday! We went on an orca whale watch and it was sooo awesome. Aren't we wackos, going on a whale watch in the middle of December! We had about a 50/50 chance of seeing whales, so I was a bit nervous that we'd be out of luck. But no, we met up with the J-pod (a family of 24 orcas!) about a half hour into our trip!!! We followed them around for about three hours. We are whale stalkers. As you may or may not know, I am crazy about marine mammals. Is that weird? I think I shoulda coulda woulda been a marine biologist if I had thought things out a little better. So I was just thrilled to see orcas in the wild! The J-pod consists of my personal favorite orca, Ruffles. I have nicknamed him Mac Daddy Pimp Juice because he is the largest male of the pod. His dorsal fin is 6 feet tall! Holy crap. They call him Ruffles because his fin is all jacked up and looks like one of those chips. We saw two baby orcas and the grandma, Granny, who is 94 years old! I believe they were performing for us. They were breaching and spy-hopping and slapping the water with their fins. It was amazing and we took some good pics. I was totally in awe, especially when we got close to the city and I could see the whales and the skyline. It just seemed so trippy to me, that they come that close to where we live! To see whales in Maine, you have to travel miles out to sea, usually. The orcas of the Northwest chill right up next to the land. Okay, I better stop now or I'll talk about them forever.
After we got home and dried out (it freakin' rained all day on our parade...) we went out to Azteca, a Mexican restaurant, with Regan. We each drank a 40 (plus one ounce) of beer at happy hour. We definitely got quite happy. We had some interesting conversations, as usual. Regan is such a riot. Then I stayed over at her place and watched Napoleon Dynamite and slept under the most glorious down comforter. Ahhh, heaven.
Today we're just chillin' and watching a Hanukkah music special on PBS and going to a beautiful cathedral tonight for a Christmas eve service. Tomorrow we're gonna open presents and go see the gay cowboy movie with our friend from work, Mark. We will also cook a Christmas brunch of eggs and bacon and all that jazz. It kinda sucks to be family-less on Christmas, but we'll make do. Merry Christmas everyone!
Jenna :)
