grad student moving to seattle

Hey Seattle,

I just accepted an offer from UW's School of Public Health, I'll be moving out here sometime in June. and yeah, I know I'm asking to get snarked.

but the good news is, I'm from Detroit, where the weather is actually worse and the standards for living are so low that you'll never hear me complain about anything. plus I'll only be here for 2 years and I'm not looking for a job.

Now that that's out of the way: I'm trying to figure out where I want to live. I've heard that I should stay out of the U-District because it's not the safest, but if that's the best place for students then I'm fine carrying some mace. Is there a neighborhood that grad students like to live in? I've heard that I should check out ravenna, wallingford, or wedgewood. Thoughts on those areas? Are they bus accessible/walking distance? I'll be living with my sugardaddyboyfriend who works for microsoft so access to buses/520 gives you bonus points.

p.s. I looked for tagged posts about this, checked the memories / read this post (it's kinda old though), and googled the community if that makes you feel any better.

edit: not really sure about price ranges--I don't know what's standard. being cheap isn't my number 1 priority, if that helps.
edit 2: I do like to go out and have fun so some kind of a nightlife would be another bonus. proximity to shopping/restaurants is great too, although I've heard rumors that Seattle has actual public transportation!
