I think that you're quite correct in saying that this would "work reasonably well as a stand alone". I also think that leaving it like this IS COMPLETELY HEARTLESS AND OH MY GOD WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO US.
Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this and would love to read more. And yes, it does work well as it is - but please! Come on!! I would so love to see the Scoobies' reactions to seeing her, and everybody's interactions with her and Spike, and learn more about what's changed about her with the demon. And of course, I'd just love to see more of Spike's reluctant-yet-unavoidable growing feelings for her, especially but not only when they'd get rightg-out romantic. Ah and of course, seeing Angelus finally dust would be bloody icing on the bloody cake. And what about a couple of glimpses into their future, travelling around the world together?
(Did I mention I'd love to read more?)

I also wanted to point out that I loved Spike's pov here, and how he kept repeating to himself just how much he didn't care about her. Absolutely delicious.
Also, this here is my favourite line: "For such a little thing she generally never sounded small." Nothing epic, but damn if that isn't a good image.
All in all, great idea, greatly executed! And thanks for sharing :)

Thank you so much! Believe me, there's nothing more motivating to write more than a long, impassioned comment like this. You'll be pleased to know that I am not totally heartless and I am currently working on the continuation of this story.

The only reason I kinda wanted to do this one as a stand alone is that I have so many plot bunnies and WIPs, I mean really. So many. And I was hoping I could just write the part I liked most from this one and get it out of the way. Buuut now this story (not to mention reader responses) has got me hooked and motivated to keep writing. And I do plan on covering most or all of the details you mentioned wanting to see. :)

And yeah, I get what you mean with the WIPs and the plot bunnies... buut I can't help but be super glad you're continuing this. :D I am a bit worried that it'll become another WIP that takes ages to be completed (you give me the impression of always having great ideas and enthusiasm to work with them), but even if that happens it's ok, if I get to read more of it :)) do you think you'll post it on Elysian Fields too?
